Evolution on the inside track: How viruses in gut bacteria change over time

[unable to retrieve full-text content]The digestive tract is home to a vast colony of bacteria, as well as the myriad viruses that prey upon them. Because the bacteria species vary from person to person, so does this viral population, the virome. By closely analyzing the virome of one individual over two-and-a-half years, researchers have uncovered new insights on the virome can change and evolve ? and why the virome of one person can vary so greatly from that of another.

2012 Ford C-MAX Titanium from UK and Ireland

Comfortable, well equipped, decent MPG (48 overall).

The dealers try, bless them, but in execution it's very poor. I am told at the dealers the fuel filter issues are endemic with the Ford 1.6 diesel engine across all its applications - just poor design. A car should be able to go 12500 miles between services without the filter clogging with water surely?

As for the tyre - Ford aren't alone in this dodge, and AA and RAC men are now all too familiar with having to piggy back cars home that have suffered nothing more drastic than a flat tyre. And I remember when a puncture was just an inconvenience.

Oh and by the way - order a space saver on a new Ford at the point of sale - cost ?80. Decide the inflation kit is a bad idea so you go get a spare - cost ?350!!?? Go figure dudes!

Data-driven approach can be used to synthesize sketches in original artist's style

By monitoring artists as they sketch human faces, stroke by stroke, scientists at Disney Research, Pittsburgh, have built computer models that learn each artist's drawing style, how they use strokes and how they select features to highlight as they interpret a face into a portrait.

A better understanding of this abstraction process, the researchers stated, not only is interesting from an artistic point of view, but also can help in developing artificial drawing tools.

"There's something about an artist's interpretation of a subject that people find compelling," said Moshe Mahler, a digital artist at Disney Research, Pittsburgh. "We're trying to capture that to create a computer model of it in a way that no one has done before."

Mahler, along with Itamar Berger and Ariel Shamir of the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya, Israel, will present the findings at ACM SIGGRAPH 2013, the International Conference on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques, July 21-25 in Anaheim, Calif. Jessica Hodgins, Vice President of Disney Research, and Elizabeth Carter, a Disney Research, Pittsburgh associate, also were part of the research team.

Other computer programs can create line drawings from photos and some can mimic certain stroke styles. The Disney Research, Pittsburgh approach, by contrast, is built on a database representing abstractions of a set of artists.

To create the database, the researchers recruited seven artists. Each sketched portraits based on 24 photographs of male and female faces using a stylus pen that enabled the researchers to record each stroke. The artists created four sketches of each photo, with decreasing time intervals allowed for each 270, 90, 30 and 15 seconds. The result was a dataset of 672 sketches at four abstraction levels.

The dataset contains about 8,000 strokes for each artist, with each stroke categorized as shading strokes or contour strokes, with contour strokes subdivided into complex and simple strokes.

"Watching these strokes accumulate was an interesting part of this project," Berger said. Some artists started with the eyes, others with the outlines of the face. One of the artists had no discernible pattern, starting "wherever."

The analysis did not only focus on strokes style but also on the geometric interpretation of the face by the artist and how it is conveyed in the drawing. For instance, one artist consistently spaced eyes closer together in the sketches than they appear in reality, while another tended to draw wide jaws. Identifying these tendencies may help artists correct bad habits, Shamir said, though in other cases these variations may simply be recognized as artistic tendencies or style.

The researchers also used their system to synthesize sketches based on new face photos. In a perceptual study, test subjects were then asked to match sketches based on style, to match synthesized sketches with those of the actual artist and to try to identify which sketches were real and which were synthesized. The results demonstrated that the sketch generation method produced multiple, distinct styles that are similar to hand-drawn sketches.

What the program can't do, Mahler emphasized, is replicate the spontaneity of an artist and their ability to balance the drawing as they work. "Our approach only understands the trends of how an artist might work," he added. And, because all of the artists based their work on photos, even the hand-drawn sketches were more constrained and reflected less personality than would have been the case if based on living, breathing subjects.

Future work could extend these techniques to subjects beyond faces or people, to other drawing techniques and might also include time-based animation, Shamir said.

Dinosaur teeth reveal feeding habits

Teeth from sauropod dinosaurs - the largest land animals that ever lived - reveal the feeding habits of these giants.

Researchers report that Diplodocus' teeth were replaced as often as once a month throughout the dinosaur's life.

In contrast, the teeth of Camarasaurus, another sauropod, show less frequent replacement, but bulkier growth.

This suggests that Diplodocus fed off low-lying vegetation while Camarasaurus ate upper-canopy plants.

Michael D'Emic, from Stony Brook University, New York, and co-workers used the daily layers of dentin, laid down as the dinosaur teeth grew, to determine the working lifetime and replacement rates of these massive herbivores' teeth.

Dr D'Emic explains "A nearly 100-foot-long sauropod would have had a fresh tooth in each position about every one to two months, sometimes less." These huge plant-eaters ate enormous quantities of vegetation, and their teeth suffered heavy wear.

The results are reported in the journal PLoS ONE.

Dr Emily Rayfield, reader in palaeobiology at the University of Bristol, commented "Diplodocus had peg-like teeth that stuck forward and out from its long narrow jaw, while Camarasaurus had a shorter jaw with a stronger bite. Their teeth wore down as they cropped vegetation."

Dinosaurs replaced their teeth constantly throughout their life with new tooth crowns sitting deep in the jaw ready to erupt beneath each working tooth. This contrasts with mammals like us, which only replace their teeth once after birth (milk teeth and adult teeth).

The results indicate that Diplodocus and Camarasaurus had different approaches to feeding, allowing them to co-exist in the same ecosystem, with Diplodocus grazing plants at ground level and Camarasaurus taking the higher-lying vegetation.

T-Rex and the one that got away

Earlier this week, a different dinosaur dental examination was described in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal. A tooth of the carnivorous giant, Tyrannosaurus rex, found in the back bone of a duck-billed dinosaur, a type of hadrosaur, has been used to infer the eating habits of T.Rex.

The study, led by Dr David Burnham at the University of Kansas, demonstrates that the hadrosaur back bone had re-healed around the embedded T.Rex tooth, showing that it escaped from the T.Rex and continued to live for some time afterwards.

Importantly, this observation feeds into a long-standing debate over whether T.Rex was a scavenger or a predator, with the authors suggesting it supports the picture of T.Rex as a predator, and not simply a carrion scavenger.

It demonstrates once more the methods used by scientists to piece together the behaviour of ancient animals from fossil fragments.

Dr Paul Barrett, dinosaur researcher at the Natural History Museum in London, added "When we look at the ecology of living animals, we see that carnivores generally eat whatever they can get hold of.

"Hyenas, that we think of as specialist scavengers, hunt quite a bit; lions, that we think of as hunters, steal carcasses from other animals.

"There is no reason to think that T.Rex, as a big carnivore, would do anything other than it would need to, to survive at the cheapest possible cost."

Can any tablet OS challenge Android and iOS?

Based on Microsoft's latest earnings report, its Surface RT is a flop. This, in turn, means that Windows RT has failed. But, there are many other would-be tablet operating system challengers to Google's Android and Apple's iOS. Seriously, though, do any of them have a real shot?

tablets
There are hundreds of millions of tablets out there, but will any significant number of them ever run anything besides Android or iOS?

Just over a third of Americans now own tablets. As time goes on, more and more of them will be buying tablets over PCs. By 2017, market research firm NPD predicts that we'll be buying six tablets for every single notebook. Of these tablets, most experts agree it's only a matter of time before Android is on top of the tablet mountain.

That's not to say Microsoft has no hopes for the tablet form factor. I believe Microsoft has a real shot of being a viable third tablet choice if they elect to place its Windows 8.1 family operating system across all devices?PCs, tablets, and smartphones.

Does anyone else have a chance? Blackberry may have given up, but there are many others who want to dethrone Android and iOS. Here, are the leading contenders in the order I rank their chances.

1) Firefox:?Firefox is actually ahead of Ubuntu on smartphones?with its Linux-based Firefox operating system. For applications, Firefox will rely upon Web-based HTML5 apps. It's an unproven route, but as we put more and more of our apps on the Web and the cloud, it may be a workable one.?

Unlike its other Linux-based rivals, Firefox OS smartphones, such as the Alcatel One Touch Fire and ZTE Open, are already shipping. Thanks to its Web browser, Firefox is better known outside of techie circles than Ubuntu and that's where the tablet audience lives.?Mozilla, Firefox's parent organization, has long ?had its eye on tablets?and, partnered with?Foxconn, its first engineering sample tablets have started to appear.

2) Ubuntu:?Ever since Canonical introduced the Ubuntu Unity interface I thought it had the potential to be a great tablet interface. While much of the news lately has been about Ubuntu's efforts to win supporters for Ubuntu on smartphones, Canonical has big plans for the Ubuntu tablet ?as well. Indeed, Ubuntu's founder, Mark Shuttleworth, has promised us that he'll be making a big announcement on July 22nd. I strongly suspect he'll be announcing major Ubuntu tablet news.

I've always been fond of Unity on devices, and I think Ubuntu has a real shot. For now, Firefox is ahead in actually shipping units. We'll see it's that still the case by year's end.?

3) Sailfish: When Nokia turned its back on the MeeGo mobile Linux project and bought into Windows Phone, five Nokia staffers started their own company, Jolla, to keep pursuing an open-source operating system approach, Sailfish OS. Unlike Mozilla and Tizen, Sailfish relies on the old Linux stand-by Qt QML, instead of HTML5 for its apps.

Sailfish is on the verge of shipping its first smartphone in the Asian market. After that, Jolla would be more than happy to ship tablets.

4) Tizen:?Tizen, like Firefox is an open-source, Linux-based mobile operating system that relies on HTML5 for apps. In theory, Tizen has Samsung's support. In practice, it's been an unwanted step-child without a clear roadmap. With its first device, a Samsung smartphone, pushed back from July to the fourth quarter, I doubt Tizen will ever live up to its promise.

That's a lot of potential players in the tablet space. All of them, except Microsoft, still aren't even really ready to compete yet. Perhaps in 2015, there will be a viable third-party tablet OS, but I really can't see it happening until then. In the meantime, Android and iOS will remain the top tablet dogs.

Blood Thinner Side Effects of Pradaxa Triggers Multiple Lawsuits ...

Following the formation of the pharmaceutical Pradaxa multidistrict litigation (MDL 2385) in late 2012, there have been more than 640 new federal claims filed. The majority of plaintiffs are alleging that the blood thinner has caused them internal bleeding and other potentially life-threatening side effects.

Dabigatran, better known as Pradaxa, marketed by Boehringer Ingelheim, is an anti-coagulant prescribed to millions of patients since its release in 2010. Now patients are coming forward with claims of life-threatening and other serious side effects.

An FDA MedWatch report states that Pradaxa caused at least 542 known deaths in 2011, the year after it was introduced to the public. Other reports include more than 2,350 cases of internal hemorrhaging, 644 strokes and almost 300 cases of acute renal failure. The most often cited side affects patients are claiming were caused by Pradaxa include gastrointestinal bleeding, brain hemorrhage, stroke, and heart attack.

The maker of Pradaxa, Boehringer Ingelheim, has been accused of concealment of risk, negligence, and strict product liability. The company has also been accused of failing to establish an internal bleeding protocol, failing to warn consumers of the high risks associated with taking Pradaxa, and failing to adequately research the medication?s safety and proper dosage.

Pradaxa has been a popular substitute for Warfarin, an anti-coagulant on the market for more than 50 years. Warfarin also increases the risk of internal bleeding, but the bleeding can be stopped with vitamin K. Pradaxa does not have a comparable antidote and there is no standard method to measure its anticoagulant effects.

Pradaxa lawsuits were consolidated in August 2012 to allow multiple litigants; four bellwether trials are scheduled for August 2014. Meanwhile, Pradaxa is still on the market and is considered a viable treatment option for those who need an anticoagulant. Anticoagulants are designed to reduce blood clotting or prevent blood clots. Anticoagulants are commonly prescribed to treat superficial venous thrombosis (SVT), deep vein clots, and deep venous thrombosis DVT. Anticoagulants are also commonly given when there is a risk of stroke.

As of April 2013, the label for Pradaxa contains a boxed warning which advises that discontinuing the medication may increase the risk of stroke.

If you or a loved one has been prescribed Pradaxa and have had any incidences of an adverse reaction, your experience should be immediately reported to the FDA.

Britain throws another ?60 million at the Skylon spaceplane, hopes mid-life crisis is over soon

After a series of successful tests on the Skylon spaceplane's SABRE engine, the UK government has decided to invest another £60 million to continue developing it. The scramjet-based tech could pave the way for cheaper space travel, since it carries little oxygen on board and can maneuver like an airplane before rockets kick it into orbit. Earlier, a key component that chills air from 1,830 to minus 302 degrees Fahrenheit in 1/100th of a second passed its trials with flying colors. That means the project team can move to the next phase: building and ground testing a prototype SABRE engine. Though billions of pounds more would be needed to eventually develop a Skylon vehicle, a European Space Agency spokesman thinks it would be worth it, saying "we have something here that is really unique." Let's hope they can match recent scramjet success stateside and avoid the whole crashing part.

North American Oil and Gas Royalty Trust Equity for Your Investment Portfolio: An Expert Analyst Discusses His Coverage and Shares Some of His Top Stock Picks

67 WALL STREET, New York - July 16, 2013 - The Wall Street Transcript has just published its Oil & Gas Review 2013 Report offering a timely review of the sector to serious investors and industry executives. This special feature contains expert industry commentary through in-depth interviews with public company CEOs, Equity Analysts and Money Managers. The full issue is available by calling (212) 952-7433 or via The Wall Street Transcript Online.

Topics covered: Increasing Demand for Midstream Assets - U.S. Energy Infrastructure Build Out - Emerging Shale Plays - Oil and Gas Transportation Infrastructure Demand - Master Limited Partnerships Distribution Growth - Outlook for Natural Gas Liquids - Low Treasury Yields and MLP Dividends

Companies include: SandRidge Energy, Inc. (SD), Chesapeake Energy Corporation (CHK), Breitburn Energy Partners LP (BBEP) and many more.

In the following excerpt from the Oil & Gas Review 2013 Report, an expert analyst discusses the outlook for the sector for investors:

TWST: You mentioned a couple of names earlier. Is there anything you'd add in terms of your current recommendations on the trusts that you do cover?

Mr. Bellamy: We cover three royalty trusts right now, and like I said, we've dropped coverage of a number of trusts that frankly we just didn't want to recommend anymore. Right now we cover Pacific Coast Oil Trust, Whiting USA Trust II (WHZ) and Enduro Royalty Trust. Our favorite trust buy-and-hold for the long term - and what I would own personally if they let me eat my own cooking - is ROYT, and that's 98% oil production from the Santa Maria and Los Angeles Basin in California. We think it has a very good structure; it's a perpetual trust, it's linked to global crude prices. California tends to trade at North Sea Brent prices, which is a premium price versus interior U.S. prices like WTI.

And then longer term, we think that there's potential production upside from their exposure to the Orcutt diatomite. We have a $21 target on ROYT, which implies 30% potential to our target and 9% in total rate of return. We think that's attractive and really well-run. It's actually one of the few that's actively marketed by the folks that run it. The management team is the same folks who run BreitBurn Energy Partners (BBEP), and that's interesting because they are in the market every day and, incidentally while we are not talking about MLPs, today we do like the BreitBurn management team and BBEP as well.

We also have "outperform" ratings on...

Glee star Cory Monteith found dead in hotel room in Canada

The actor, who was dating co-star Lea Michele, was found dead in his room at Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel in Vancouver around noon on Saturday

Glee star Cory Monteith has been found dead at hotel in Canada.

The 31-year-old, who played the character Finn Hudson in the TV series, was found dead in his room on the 21st floor of the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel in Vancouver around noon on Saturday.

Deputy Police Chief Doug Lepard said there is no indication of foul play.

The body of Monteith, who was dating co-star Lea Michele, was found by hotel staff after he missed his check-out time, Mr Lepard said.

"We do not have a great deal of information as to cause of death," Coroner Lisa Lapointe said.

Mr Lepard said Monteith had been out with people earlier and that those people are being interviewed.

Monteith voluntarily checked himself into rehab for substance abuse problems in April.

The actor said during an interview in 2011 that he had been to rehab when he was 19.

Monteith was always open about his struggle with substance abuse and requested ?privacy? in the steps towards recovery.

He "voluntarily admitted himself to a treatment facility for substance addiction," his rep told People earlier this year.

?

Lea Michele told the US website she was ?proud? her boyfriend was seeking help in rehab and vowed to ?stand by him? through the difficult time.

"I love and support Cory and will stand by him through this,? she said at the time.

"I am grateful and proud he made this decision"

In interviews about his past, Monteith openly spoke about his addiction and hoped his honesty would help others.

He confessed to having serious problems and would take "anything and everything". He told Parade in 2011 that he was "lucky to be alive".

Iran's president-elect criticizes outgoing leader

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's president-elect on Monday leveled his first criticism of the outgoing administration since June's election, saying it has mismanaged the country's economy.

Several newspapers quoted Hasan Rouhani as saying his team of experts see the government's economic assessments as sugar-coated, and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as having left much work to be done.

"We asked current officials about the situation of the country but their reports and those of our teams were very far from each other," he said in remarks published by the pro-reform Shargh daily.

Despite Ahmadinejad's claims of creating hundreds of thousands of jobs, he added, only an average 14,000 were created annually over the 2006 to 2012 period.

Inflation, he said, actually stands at 42 percent and not the officially reported 32 percent. On Sunday, the central bank put the rate at nearly 36 percent.

In a meeting with members of parliament late Sunday, Rouhani urged for close cooperation between his office and parliament in order to overcome the country's serious difficulties.

"Today, the country has a difficult and complicated situation partly because of domestic policies and partly because of unfair foreign pressures," he said in the published remarks.

Iran has been hit with several series of international sanctions over its disputed nuclear program, which the West suspects has a military dimension. Iran denies the charge.

Rouhani, who assumes office on Aug. 3, regularly criticized Ahmadinejad during his presidential campaign. He won nearly 51 percent of the votes in last month's election.

Leroy Comrie Drops Queens Borough President Bid

comrie

Councilman Leroy Comrie. (Photo: Facebook)

Councilman Leroy Comrie today announced an end to his bid for Queens borough president, citing ?personal matters? as his reason for leaving the race.

?After careful consideration, my family and I believe, due to personal matters, this is the best course of action,? Mr. Comrie said in a statement. ?I remain steadfast in my faith and belief in government and it is a true honor to continue to serve the people of Southeast Queens in my capacity as Councilman.?

Mr. Comrie surprised some in the political establishment when he decided to continue his campaign after the Queens Democratic Party in May endorsed a rival candidate, Melinda Katz. Despite mulling leaving the race, Mr. Comrie continued to score endorsements, including former Mayor David Dinkins, and held a campaign kickoff event last month on the steps of Queens Borough Hall.

Queens Democratic insiders weren?t sure about the legitimacy of Mr. Comrie?s campaign, however. Some had predicted, accurately ultimately, that he would eventually exit the race around the time when petitions were due to be handed in this week. He remains close to the county organization and would have complicated Ms. Katz?s path to victory against rivals like Councilman Peter Vallone Jr., a strong fund-raiser.

Mr. Comrie, who is term-limited, has been a rumored candidate for deputy borough president or even the sseat occupied by indicted State Senator Malcolm Smith. With his exit, only Ms. Katz, Mr. Vallone Jr. and State Senator Tony Avella remain in the Democratic primary.

?Queens is one of the greatest boroughs in ?our city, ?and I am thankful to everyone for the opportunity ?to showcase my ?platform for inclusion and empowerment and express my passion for the borough that was afforded me in this race,? Mr. Comrie said. ?I am looking forward to ?serving ?the people of Queens?in one capacity or another?for a long time to come.?

Rumor: Retina iPad Mini Pushed Back to 2014

Apple iPad Mini

Hoping to get your hands on an iPad mini with a Retina display this year? Don't hold your breath.

According to a report from Taiwan's Economic Daily News, Apple's 7.9-inch tablet may not be outfitted with a higher-resolution Retina display until early next year. Apple had originally planned to launch a Retina iPad mini this fall, but shortages of the updated display panels forced Cupertino to push back the release until early 2014, the report notes.

The existing iPad mini includes a 1,024-by-768 display, the same as the iPad 2. When the second-generation iPad mini makes its debut, it may come in both Retina and non-Retina versions, according to the report. There's no word as to how much the Retina-equipped model might cost.

Apple first unveiled the iPad mini last October, so one might think that if the company was following an annual release schedule we'd see a follow-up this year. But, as we know, Apple doesn't exactly follow a set schedule.

The company threw its traditional release rhythm into question when it refreshed its tablet lineup last October, just seven months after launching the third-generation iPad. Meanwhile, the iPhone 4S came 18 months after the iPhone 4 and Macs re-up whenever they feel like it. So, it wouldn't exactly be shocking if Apple failed to release the second-generation iPad mini this year.

But as the holiday shopping season approaches, this might be bad news for Apple, given all the other small-tablet options on the market.

Whether or not it arrives this year, there is evidence Apple has been working on a Retina iPad mini. Back in February, leaked photos showed off what looked like an updated iPad mini back casing that was slightly thicker than the current version. A thicker housing would support the notion, rumored almost since the launch of the first iPad mini, that Apple would have to slightly increase the device's thickness to support a Retina display.

For more, see: Retina Display on the iPad Mini: What It Would Take. Also check out PCMag's full review of the iPad mini.

Slashed: 2014 Ford Focus Electric Price Drops $4000 to $35,995

Buyers of the 2014 Ford Focus Electric will save $4000 compared to the 2013 model, with the EV hatchback starting at $35,995 before government incentives for 2014. The price cut comes less than a month after the automaker said it would not lower prices like some of the competition, The Detroit News reports.

2014 Ford Focus EV left rear 1 300x199 image? We?re not going to chase down to the lowest price possible ? that doesn?t make sense to erode the brand image or the true value of the product,? Nancy Gioia, Ford?s director of global electrification told The Detroit News last month.

Ford isn?t the first automaker to lower its electric vehicle?s price: Nissan and Honda have dropped prices on their respective EVs, while GM is currently offering $4000 cash off the 2013 Volt PHEV ($39,995 down to $35,995) or special financing for qualified buyers. While the incentives on the Volt may have been instituted to make room for 2014 models, we?ll know whether the lower prices will remain when pricing for the 2014 Volt is revealed next month.? Despite the price cut, the Focus EV is still $6345 more than the lowest-priced Nissan Leaf EV.

All prices include destination, and don?t take into account federal (up to $7500) or state (up to $2500) incentives.

Does slashing prices on electric vehicles increase their appeal? Share your thoughts below.

How Israel's war on Gaza breeds anger, grief and courage

JABALIA REFUGEE CAMP, GAZA // Musab Hijazi longs to see Suhaib, his twin brother.

They were best friends, his family said. Inseparable.

The three-year-old does not grasp what happened on the evening of November 19, when an Israeli missile exploded in the living room of the family home in Gaza's Jabalia refugee camp, killing three members of his family: his father, an older brother, and his twin.

"When he sees pictures of his Suhaib, he speaks to him like he's still alive," said his mother, Aamna Hijazi, in her early 40s. "We try to tell him that Suhaib is gone but he doesn't understand."

While he may be too young to comprehend the loss, Musab is not alone in struggling with the aftermath of those eight days of war last November, fought between Israel and Gaza's Hamas rulers, which killed 158 Palestinians and six Israelis.

Scores of other children, their families and friends in this besieged territory are still wrestling with the emotional and physical trauma of losing loved ones.

The fighting started intensified after Israel assassinated a Hamas official. Gaza militants fired rockets at Israel, which responded with airstrikes on the territory.

During the holy month of Ramadan - the first since the war ended - coming to terms with such tragedy will be as difficult as ever, they said.

"We have a situation where large numbers of these people are still suffering from severe cases of post-traumatic stress disorder," said Saleh Mohsen, a mental-health counsellor at primary and secondary schools in Gaza. "The victims are in desperate need of psychological intervention, but many either don't seek out such support, or it's just not available to them."

Mr Mohsen holds group-therapy sessions for parents who lost children during the November war. In some cases, he said, they suffer from extended periods of denial.

"I counselled one man who simply didn't believe his son had died," he said. "For months after the war, he would go to the cemetery and try to dig up his son's grave because he believed he was still alive. His family would find him at the cemetery and every time, they would have to explain to him again and again that his son was gone."

Thirty-three children in Gaza were killed during the fighting, according to Defence for Children International Palestine Section, a non-governmental organisation based in Geneva, Switzerland. Most of them were killed by Israeli bombs.

On its website, the organisation says 561 children have been killed - including 352 during Israel's three-week war on Gaza that began in December 2008 - during fighting with Israel in the territory since 2005.

Beset by continuing conflict, an Israeli blockade and grinding poverty, Gaza's 1.7 million residents seldom find respite. Mr Mohsen recalled another one of his patients, a mother, who is still tormented by what she endured during the 2008-2009 war, which killed as many as 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis.

After an airstrike caused a fire at her home, she climbed to the upper level of the house with her four-year-old son. In panic, she threw him onto the street below, thinking that would save him from burning to death.

The child suffered a broken arm, but his mother never overcame the guilt of that decision, Mr Mohsen said.

"During our sessions, all she would do is cry and say my words are worthless, that I never had to experience what she experienced," he said.

Back in the Hijazi home, Aamna must now try to raiseb and his five brothers and sisters without her husband, Fouad. He was 46 and worked as a school security guard.

Aamna was lucky to survive the attack, but her injuries were signifcant and left her with serious disabilities. Her right shoulder was broken, her ability to walk has been impaired and after coming out of a ten-day coma, she has suffered from uncontrollable shaking in her right arm, which she said doctors cannot diagnose.

She awoke from her coma in a hospital in Egypt, where medical personnel had taken her for emergency treatment after the airstrike. Her sister-in-law then informed her about the death of Fouad and her two children, Suhaib and her four-year-old, Mohammed.

"When she told me that, for a moment all I wanted to do was die," Aamna said.

But she said she realised she had to remain strong to help raise her two daughters and four sons, including 17-year-old Ashraf. He sometimes pushes his mother in her wheelchair to the market to help with the shopping. He has become a father figure of sorts to his younger sibling.

But like many here, he also seethes with anger. Just as he vowed shortly after the war's end, Ashraf still wants to exact revenge on Israel for the attack on his family.

"I lost my father. I lost my brothers. I have to take care of the family. I am responsible for them," he said, and then added that he wants to join "the resistance."

That is exactly the urge that Ahmed Basioni, 36, wants his 17-year-old son, Nader, to resist. In November, Nader watched as shrapnel from an airstrike cut through the family home in northern Gaza and decapitate Fares, his nine-year-old brother.

Nader also sustained wounds in his leg, which have healed.

But since the attack, he dropped out of school and has been approached by members of militant factions on multiple occasions. "They're trying to recruit Nader because they know his brother is a martyr," Ahmed said.

"But fighting Israel is useless because it's always the normal people like us who die. I don't want my son to die doing something useless."

Ahmed has refused to seek offers of free psychological counselling for Nader and his family. He has instead sealed off Fares' old room, leaving all his belongings, including a birdcage, untouched. Only Ahmed enters the room from time to time, to think, he said.

"It's too painful for the family to go in there," he said.

Sealing one's self off from Gaza's reality is an act of futility, according to Shadi Abu Makthour, 29, an English teacher at a United Nations-run school in the Shijaiya neighbourhood of Gaza City.

He tries to get his class of 12-year-old students to open up about their experiences during the war, even if he acknowledges such discussions may not be as therapeutic as he would like.

"How can we overcome such damage when you know you might be destroyed in the next war?" he said.

This summer, he has worked as an instructor at UN-administered youth camp in the area. On a recent day during the camp, he recalled several of his students, thinking they heard an Israeli helicopter in the distance, fleeing the scene.

"They told me they thought that another war was about to happen," he said. "These children are terrified."

For Aamna and the Hijazi family, they have done their best to rebuild their lives amid the constant threat of war and destruction. Some US$30,000 (Dh110,000) in donations from the community, including financial aid from Hamas, helped them build a new home over the remains of their destroyed one.

But Aamna worries about her family's future. Looking over Musab as he played in their new living room, she said: "I want stability, security for my family. I want them to live like human beings, to have an education.

"That's what any parent wants."
