Cat lovers of greater New Orleans will flock to The International Cat Association (TICA) show, 'Voodoo Cats,' this weekend (Nov. 23-25) at the Hilton New Orleans Airport. Voodoo Cats is presented by the Lafayette-based Evangeline County Cat Fanciers, and features 18 rings of judging, themed cat costume contests, and special divisions for junior exhibitors and household pets.

Casual spectators are welcome Friday (Nov. 23) from 4 to 9 p.m., Saturday (Nov. 24) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday (Nov. 25) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission costs $5 for adults, $4 for children ages 3 to 10, and is free for children under age 3. Upon entry, attendees will be directed to exhibitor areas and judging rings. Each entered cat will be judged a total of 18 times over the three-day show, with "best of the best" awards given out Sunday (Nov. 25).

Anne Paul, who is managing this show with Wendy Klamm, shared what is so special about the exhibitions. TICA sports an international crowd of cats, exhibitors and judges. Moreover, the inclusion of a household category allows casual cat fanciers to enter their beloved pets, including rescued and adopted animals. "They're not pedigree cats, but they're going to compete in a separate division from championship cats," Paul said.

On Sunday (Nov. 25), the show will feature a junior exhibitor ring judged by Fate Mays. Exhibitors under the age of 18 will compete in the junior division. Paul's own daughters will be competing Sunday, entering their household cats for judging. She considers the junior exhibition a character-building exercise "It challenges their knowledge on the cat and lets the parent know where they're lacking in terms of teaching the kids with the cats. It's an all-around quality family time, and it's learning the responsibilities of taking care of these animals. It makes them a better person."

The Evangeline Country Cat Fanciers believe in responsible pet ownership and donate to charities caring for the unwanted cat population. A portion of the proceeds from this weekend's cat show will be donated to local shelters and animal welfare organizations. Additionally, attendees who wish to bring a furry friend home will be able to find rescue cats available for on-site adoption.

On Saturday (Nov. 24), the cat show will celebrate the Voodoo theme with three special contests. Georgia Morgan, founder of The International Cat Association, will judge the special events: a cage decorating contest for best voodoo theme, a best dressed Marie Laveau costume contest (for female felines) and a best dressed Jazzy Cat costume contest (for male felines).

If you have any questions about this event, call Anne Paul at 337.488.3977. (Please, no phone calls before 9 a.m. or after 9 p.m.)
