Fed up with waiting, air travelers rush rental car counters

8 hrs.

As hundreds of thousands of fliers still stranded by Superstorm Sandy struggle to get home or resume their disrupted itineraries, many are getting frustrated with air travel and turning to four-wheel transportation options.

Car rental companies are reporting unusual activity in the wake of the storm, with travelers desperate to get moving.

?It?s people saying, ?I?m stuck, I?ve got to get out of here?,? said Richard Broome, a spokesman for Hertz.

The company estimates it will have rented 10,000 cars one-way from the storm-affected area, compared to a few hundred -- at most -- reservations of this type at this time of the year, Broome said. It means lots of people are picking up a car at one location and dropping it off at another far away, a shift from the typical car rental.

?For this kind of activity, you only see it during truly catastrophic events. Major natural disasters and, for example, 9/11,? Broome said.

Hertz has a very large number of reservations in New York, but it doesn?t physically have enough cars in the city to handle them, he added. The company is moving the cars in as quickly as it can. Orbitz is reporting a 14 percent spike in car rental rates in the Big Apple compared to last week, an indication of increased demand.

For travelers who either couldn?t get a rental car or who are waiting for a flight, there was some good news on Wednesday: JFK and Newark airports provided limited air service. Travelers should check with their airlines before heading to the airport and should take precautionary measures as terminals may have limited food and concessions.

LaGuardia remained closed Wednesday and was described by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo as having suffered ?extensive damage.? It will open on Thursday and offer limited service, according to an e-mail alert from the airport.

Robert Reid is among the many stranded travelers waiting to return home after the storm. On Wednesday, he was in Bogota, Colombia, preparing to fly back to JFK International after Sandy unexpectedly extended his trip to Ecuador by several days. His original flight would have put him in New York on Monday just as the hurricane was arriving, so he was relieved when it was canceled. Reid used the delay to relax in Quito.

"These are crazy times," said Reid, who is the U.S. travel editor for Lonely Planet. "(But) I can't complain. I was lucky. I'd rather spend a few bonus days in the Andes with hot chocolate cafes than be stuck back in New York."

Carriers have canceled more than 19,500 flights since Sunday, according to FlightAware.com. Almost 3,000 flights were scrubbed today, with LaGuardia accounting for most of them.

Flooded subway tunnels and train tracks in New York are having an impact on carriers who may have planes ready to go but whose pilots, flight attendants, gate agents and other employees are having a hard time getting to the airport.

Limited subway service will be restored to 14 of 23 lines on Thursday, Gov. Cuomo announced.

For airlines, it will probably take at least until this weekend for the domestic backlog to sort out, said George Hobica, founder of Airfarewatchdog.com. It could take a bit longer for people stranded in Asia and Europe who are trying to come back to the U.S., depending on the number of flights and seats available.

?But we will see many people deciding not to begin outward journeys or postponing non-essential outbound trips until after the mess clears up, so that will help,? Hobica said.

The big job now for airlines is to assess the damage and regroup:

  • Delta resumed about 50 percent of its schedule at JFK on Wednesday. It expects to resume operations at LaGuardia on Thursday.;
  • United resumed inbound flights to JFK and Newark on Wednesday afternoon;
  • American Airlines plans to operate limited flights into JFK on Wednesday evening and will resume flying out of JFK, LaGuardia and Newark on Thursday morning;
  • JetBlue saw its first arrival at JFK International on Wednesday morning and is looking at a phased return to service. There still will be no JetBlue departures from JFK until Thursday when the airline plans on operating at about 50 percent of its schedule. The airline plans to resume flights at Newark on Thursday.

Airlines will use bigger planes and add more flights to speed things up if they can, said Brett Snyder, who runs the Cranky Concierge air travel assistance service.

?It could have been a lot worse, but this is a lower demand travel time so there is more slack in the system to recover than you'd find around the holidays,? he said.

Presidential polls: Where presidential race stands as hurricane Sandy buffets US politics

Presidential polls:?Hurricane Sandy is interfering with pollsters' ability to collect accurate data about the public's views on the presidential race. Here's a status report on where the Obama-Romney contest stood pre-Sandy.

By Peter Grier,?Staff writer / October 29, 2012

It's crunchtime as hurricane Sandy disrupts campaigning for President Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

Election polling is among the many American activities hurricane Sandy is disrupting. At least two major tracking polls ? the?Gallup?poll and the Investor?s Business Daily/TIPP survey ? have suspended operations as the gigantic storm sweeps across much of the US Northeast. Other pollsters might find their jobs more complicated if millions of households in the region lose power and become unreachable by phone.

That said, now might be a good time to sit back and look at overall polling measures of the presidential race. It could be the last time prior to Election Day that we get to see numbers that haven?t been swung one way or another by falling wires and flooded roads.

For major compendiums of polls ? which crunch together lots of surveys to try to mitigate the errors and chance inherent in the business ? the bottom line remains as it has for some time now: Republican Mitt Romney retains a narrow edge, so narrow that it falls within the margin of error of the enterprise.

The RealClearPolitics rolling average of major polls, as of Monday afternoon, had Mr. Romney leading President Obama by one percentage point, for instance, 47.7 percent to 46.7 percent.

The Huffington Post statistical model, which combines state and local polls, in contrast showed Romney up by a mere two-tenths of a percentage point, 47.4 percent to 47.2 percent.

Both these measures have been generally stable over the past week. (Both also take into account Monday?s Politico/George Washington University Battleground poll, which shows Mr. Obama up by one percentage point, and the daily Gallup tracking poll, which had Romney back up by five among likely voters. So, partisans, please don?t e-mail us saying we?re ignoring the polls most favorable to your candidate.)

But in the race to 270 Electoral College votes and actual victory, Obama appears to maintain the small lead he?s had for weeks. The Huffington Post state-by-state model judges Obama likely to collect 277 Electoral College votes, according to how things stand at the moment, with Romney at 206.

The ?Now-cast? of New York Times polling analyst Nate Silver puts Obama as the favorite to win 299.8 electoral votes, given current state polls, with Romney?s corresponding number at 238.2

This apparent split in the state and national results stems from Obama?s continued leads in the many of the most important battleground states, such as Ohio, where the RealClearPolitics rolling average puts him in front by a slim 1.9 percentage points. Obama?s also up in New Hampshire and Iowa, by around 2 percentage points in each case, while he?s tied with Romney in Colorado and Virginia, according to RCP.

Again, this reflects a situation that has seemed stable over the past week to 10 days. Even with only a week left in the race, there?s still time for that to change, of course, given that the margins between the candidates are so slim. But hurricane Sandy?s effects may in essence throw lots of noise into poll results, meaning surveys might not reflect any movement one way or another until Election Day is almost upon us.

Anthropology & Democracy III: The stand aside or do something ...

This is Part III of a series of posts on anthropology and democracy.? Part I is here, Part II, here.

In the USA, the spectre of democracy looms.? It is days away.? November 6, when people all across the country will step into a small booth and exercise their right to participate in the democratic system by choosing between representatives from the two dominant political parties (oh, and a slew of others that the vast majority of people have not heard of).? This is democracy at the highest political level.? Democracy at its finest.? The pinnacle.? Right?

Maybe not.? Maybe, as DJ pointed out in his comment, we need to pay attention to the various scales at which democracy operates?and what that means for our understanding(s) of what democratic practices are all about.? In the US, I think it?s both interesting and telling that the presidential elections are often treated as a kind of democratic pinnacle or climax?as if it?s really the most important part of the massive iceberg of political and/or potential democratic action.? What about all of the democracies?or lack thereof?taking place as we trickle on down the various levels of social structure?? Things start to look different, maybe, when they move away from the media pomp and glitz that absolutely drench presidential election hoopla.? And this has me wondering whether all of this focus on ?the big event? serves a certain political purpose in its own right.? If everyone is paying attention to the big event, what?s happening everywhere else?

And where does the anthropological project fit within all this?? When I posted the first installment of this series, calling for a collective investigation of anthropology & democracy, Keith Hart wrote this as a reply on Facebook: ?Seems like a good idea to me, especially since the origins of anthropology in the 18th century?s revolutionary democratic project has been forgotten by practitioners (honorable exceptions include L.H. Morgan) for over 200 years.?

Which leads me to this question: Is anthropology a democratic project these days?? It is, after all, buried within not-so-democratic institutions (this very question was raised by regular commenter DWP in response to my second post).? Do we strive for anthropology to be democratic, or is that just the kind of politicization that ought best be avoided?? Should anthropologists stand aside and study the various ?democracies? around the world in a detached, objective manner, or should anthropology be geared toward fostering democratic practices and institutions?? When it comes to democracy, do we stand outside the fish bowl looking in, or do we jump in and try to manage the currents from within?? Please take these questions and run with them.? Or swim, as it may be?

The new venture, to be named Penguin Random House, will become the world?s largest publisher and control about 25 percent of all books published in the US.

The decision (about which rumors leaked last week)?illustrates a growing trend in the publishing industry toward consolidation as a means to provide a more united front against the changes the industry is facing, including the rise of digital books, the growing power of web retailers like Amazon, and the erosion of traditional bricks-and-mortar bookstores.

Sylvia Plath: 10 quotes on her birthday

?The consumer publishing industry is going through a period of tumultuous change, propelled by digital technologies and the giant companies that dominate them," Pearson Chief Executive Marjorie Scardino said in an email to staff, according to Reuters. ?The book publishing industry today is remarkable for being composed of a few large, and a lot of relatively small companies, and there probably isn't room for them all ??they're going to have to get together.?

By merging, the companies ?will create a publishing giant that will have more heft at a time when the book business is being rocked by the rise of online retailers and e-books,? writes the Wall Street Journal.

?Together, the two publishers will be able to share a large part of their costs, to invest more for their author and reader constituencies and to be more adventurous in trying new models in this exciting, fast-moving world of digital books and digital readers,? said Marjorie Scardino, Pearson's chief executive.

Under the terms of the agreement, Bertelsmann (Random House) will own 53 percent of the joint venture while Pearson (Penguin) will own 47 percent.

As many have pointed out, the union of the two publishing houses will result in a medley of odd bedfellows, including the likes of Patricia Cornwell, Nora Roberts, erotic fiction writer E.L. James, George R.R. Martin, and 2012 Nobel Prize winner Mo Yan.

To some, however, the literary matrimony is anything but happily ever after. Writers and readers? groups are speculating there will be less competition, less diversity, and less price competitiveness as a result of the merger.

?Telecom companies, airlines, banks ??it's hard to think of a single high-stakes merger that's resulted in lower prices and more innovation,? writes the LA Times. ?It's pretty simple: The less competition you have, the less pressure there is to fight for customers? With only a handful of major players, it seems likely that sellers will be free to set their own prices, rather than reflect the actual cost of distributing literature in digital form, which is fairly minuscule.?

?For those who love to read,? continued the Times, ?admittedly, a dying breed ? this isn?t good news.?

Meteor gathers another $18m for Hawken | Games industry news ...

Free-to-play mech combat title Hawken has received an additional $18m in funding ahead of its December launch.

VentureBeat reports publisher Meteor Entertainment has brought in the sizable amount as part of its second round of fundraising, bringing the total to $28.5m raised thus far for the game.

Despite being an independent effort from relative newcomer Adhesive Games, the investment figure has reached AAA heights due to its sleek look, f2p monetization scheme, and (perhaps most interestingly) the opportunity for the game to disrupt the online gaming market.

?It?s clear from this investment that we do not believe the game industry as an investment category is going down,? said Nate Redmond of new investor Rustic Canyon Ventures.

?From watching disruption in multiple industries and seeing it come to games, that is appealing to me as an investor and a gamer. We see how quickly it is happening. The incumbents see it, but they can?t change quickly enough to capture it.?

"Our management team is full of gamers and we believe there is an opportunity to disrupt online gaming in China,? said Jay Chang, chief financial officer at Kong Zhong ?? another one of the project?s several new investors.

"We think Hawken has the potential to be even bigger than World of Tanks. The Chinese market is maturing and there are a lot of users for free-to-play games.?

Microsoft announces Skype app for Windows Phone 8 with new UI, deep People Hub integration (video)

Last week, if you recall, Microsoft announced Skype for Windows 8, a touch-friendly app that appeared in the Windows Store the same day Win 8 went on sale. Now, with Windows Phone 8 getting its big reveal, the company is following up with a WP8 version, which Microsoft says is coming soon. Like the new Windows 8 app, it runs in the background, delivering push notifications even when you're looking at something else. In particular, now that Windows Phone allows for three different tile sizes, you can view the Skype tile in small, medium or large formats, with the largest displaying your latest message. (All tile sizes show an unread message count.)

There are other similarities to the Win 8 app, too, despite the fact that these phones have smaller screens. There's a favorites list, for one, along with a shortcut that makes it easy to toggle between open IM conversations. As on Windows 8, the app is deeply integrated with the People Hub, so that Skype handles appear on contact cards and incoming Skype calls look the same as any other. On the messaging side, there's an impressively large collection of emoticons (TMI-face, anybody?). It's also possible to start group chats, as well as change the conversation topic. So far, it's unclear when, exactly, the app will be available for download, but in the meantime we've got a short video demo waiting for you after the break.

Report: Iran has drone pictures of Israeli bases

Iran has images of sensitive Israeli military bases taken by a drone that was launched by Lebanon's Hezbollah movement and downed by Israel earlier this month, a senior Iranian lawmaker claimed Monday Oct. 29 2012 in the latest boast from Tehran about purported advances in the capabilities of its unmanned aircraft. The announcement gave no details about the photos ? other than calling the Israeli bases "forbidden sites" ? but it suggested Iranian drones have the ability to transmit data while in flight. (AP) ? Iran has images of sensitive Israeli military bases taken by a drone that was launched by Lebanon's Hezbollah movement and downed by Israel earlier this month, a senior Iranian lawmaker claimed Monday in the latest boast from Tehran about purported advances in the capabilities of its unmanned aircraft.

The announcement gave no details about the photos ? other than calling the Israeli bases "forbidden sites" ? but it suggested Iranian drones have the ability to transmit data while in flight. It also appeared aimed at warning Israel about the options for retaliation for any possible strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

A prominent lawmaker, Ismaeil Kowsari, also was quoted as saying that the Iranian-backed Hezbollah possesses more sophisticated Iranian-made drones than the one that was downed, including some that could carry weapons. There was no immediate comment from Israeli officials.

"These drones transmit the pictures online," Kowsari he told the semiofficial Mehr news agency. "The pictures of forbidden sites taken and transmitted by this drone are now in our possession."

The lawmaker, who heads the parliament's defense committee, said Hezbollah is "definitely" equipped with more sophisticated drones, but gave no further details.

Hezbollah "won't announce it as long as it doesn't see the need to do so ... That's why we say we will respond to Israel inside (its) territory, should it take any action against us," said Kowsari, a former commander of the powerful Revolutionary Guard.

Iran has claimed that Iranian-made surveillance drones have made dozens of apparently undetected flights into Israeli airspace from Lebanon in recent years. Israel has rejected the account.

Iran's Defense Minister Ahmad Vahid also claimed on Sunday that Tehran has drones far more advanced than the Ayub unmanned aircraft launched by Hezbollah, saying it was not the "latest Iranian technology, definitely." He did not elaborate.

Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah has said the Ayub drone was manufactured in Iran and assembled in Lebanon.

Iran routinely announces technological breakthroughs in its defense program. Last month it claimed to have started producing a long-range missile-carrying drone with a range of 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles).

The Shahed-129, or Witness-129, covers much of the Middle East including Israel and nearly doubles the range of previous drones produced by Iranian technicians, who have often relied on reverse engineering military hardware with the country under Western embargo.

But it's unclear whether the new drone contains any elements of an unmanned CIA aircraft that went down in eastern Iran last year. Iran said it has recovered data from the RQ-170 Sentinel and claimed it was building its own replica.

Iran's claims are impossible to independently confirm because the country's arsenal is not open to widespread international inspection with multinational war games or other cooperation.

An encounter with an anti-Japanese real estate agent: Shanghaiist

Shanghai-based American expat Jacob Flowers writes in to warn us of an anti-Japanese real estate agency, Furenju Realty (?????), located in Putuo district's Brilliant City compound (?????), with which he had the following nasty encounter Thursday evening:

So, my current landlord wants to repossess the house to live in it, so I obviously have to find some new digs. As usual, I go through many agents to see as many places as possible (and because there are obviously good agents and bad agents). Sometimes as most of us know, agent showings will sometimes overlap with seeing the same place more than once (especially if you are looking in a specific compound).

One day, I am walking with some of my local friends around my compound gardens, and one of them says "oh shit, look at that agency!". I look, and there is nothing that stands out, except that my friend elaborates "you see that sign above their window. It says that they will not do business with japanese pigs!". No matter your position on the Diaoyu Islands, I was still appalled at the racism of it.

So I found this one agent online (the ones that use the fake pictures) and told her what I needed. She was workable because her english was somewhat comprehensible. For this reason, I did not know where her actual company was. One of the other main agents I was using was one of those agencies I walked into.

Long story short, it comes down to the wire, and I see a house I really like. Two agents however showed me the same house. One agent did MOST of the work for me in showing me many suitable places, and such, so I wanted to give the commission to him. But unfortunately, my conscience got the best of me, and I felt that the right thing to do would be to go with the agent who showed me the house FIRST. Right? So I make the arrangements, and she invites me to her agency the next night. As we proceed to her office, I get the sick feeling that we are heading in the direction of the racist agency. And it was.

I'm sitting there during the signing getting a sick feeling in my stomach, and my mind is burning. I feel that I can NOT do business with these folk, even though the girl agent was quite kindly. I call my chinese friend, explain the situation and ask for some advice. He says he understands, and talks to the landlord directly over the phone explaining my discomfort. The landlord says he understands completely and is willing to sign the contract with me with a new agency.

I apologize to the agents, and explain to them, I am not comfortable doing business with them, and point to their sign as my reason why. I tell them, that I can not accept racist attitudes. The agents are kindly, but they begin to press me into signing with them. They are telling me that it is against the law to sign with another agency if I saw it with them first, which I know is NOT TRUE, so I tell them that I've lived in China for 5 years, and who I chose to do business with is my own discretion. Myself and the landlord leave the agency, and the agents follow. I ask them to stop following, but they refuse and all the while are trying to coerce myself and the landlord into signing immediately.

We reach just outside the door of the other agency, when some unknown guy joins the parade, and begins yelling at me. He speaks NO english mind you. I explain to him, that I am going with another agency, who showed us the house, and even though it was my second time with them, it was the first time my friend had seen the house who would be living with me. I am calm, respectful, and obviously can not say too much due to my limited ability. I use my phone to google translate my intentions, but this guy swipes my phone away and says that he doesn't care what I have to say. The girl agent proceeds to tell me that this man is the manager of the agency. He then proceeds to say some very insulting things about foreigners. I ask him if he understands what my issue is, for which the agent girl says something to him, and he begins to get in my face, shouting "????????????." and he begins to edge closer attempting to prompt me to some sort of action. I am calm, and obviously have no way of interacting with his level of chinese, but shaking. At this point a crowd has gathered, and he is in my face shouting for a good 10 minutes, all the while the landlord is saying in chinese "do not speak to him that way, he is a foreigner. Calm down, calm down". His continual barrage of insults and threats seem to have no way of relenting even when I tell him, I can not understand everything he is saying. To diffuse the situation, I simply tell him that I will stay in my current house and do not wish to sign any contracts at all. I was very careful to say, that I love China, and this is not about me supporting Japan. It is simply about me feeling uncomfortable doing business with people who so flagrantly post racist propaganda.

After everyone leaves, the girl agent is begging me to still sign the contract, to which I reply, "Absolutely not. Your manager just threatened me physically because I do not agree with his racist beliefs, and you expect me to do business with you? Your country hosted the 2008 Olympics, and the Shanghai 2010 Expo, where you wanted to showcase your improvements to the world. 'One World. One Dream'. Where is your company's decorum, respect, and civility? You want other nations to respect you, then do not act like savages!"

I lost the house, as more than likely the manager threatened the landlord as well, since he is no longer renting his house out via the two agencies I used. I am going to still try to get the house via a different agency, but who knows. If you want to have a certain ideology, then you ought to accept the consequences inherent with it. And yelling and screaming at people who do not understand entirely what you are saying, is not a good way to retain business.

When contacted by Shanghaiist, the manager of the real estate agency confirmed the key points in the above account, but remained adamant that it was the foreigner who had first "insulted the Chinese nation".

'Argo' finally tops box office with $12.4M

(AP) ? It took three weeks, but "Argo" finally found its way to the top of the box office.

The Warner Bros. thriller from director and star Ben Affleck, inspired by the real-life rescue of six U.S. embassy workers during the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis, made nearly $12.4 million this weekend, according to Sunday studio estimates. "Argo" had been in second place the past two weeks and has now made about $60.8 million total.

Debuting at No. 3 was the sprawling, star-studded "Cloud Atlas," which made a disappointing $9.4 million. The nearly three-hour drama, also from Warner Bros., was co-directed by siblings Lana and Andy Wachowski and Tom Tykwer and features an ensemble cast including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry and Hugh Grant playing multiple roles over six story lines.

Dan Fellman, head of distribution at Warner Bros., said the studio thought there might be a good chance of "Argo" coming out on top this weekend.

"We're thrilled. An accomplishment like that is well deserved, they don't happen very often. You would probably have to do a lot of searching to find a movie that opened in wide release to have two No. 2 weekends in a row and hit No. 1 in the third week," Fellman said. "It's a tribute to the film. Word-of-mouth has taken over the campaign. We have a long way to go, we have a lot of year-end accolades which will approach, and we'll see what happens in terms of the Academy."

On the flip side, Fellman acknowledged that "Cloud Atlas" underperformed compared to hopes that it would end up in the $11-12 million range domestically. The movie had an estimated budget of $100 million. But he pointed out that it had a higher per-screen average than any other film opening in the top 10 with $4,681.

"We did very well on the East and West coasts in a number of major cities," he said. "We're challenged in the Midwest and the South."

It was a soft weekend all around, though, with several newcomers opening poorly, Hollywood.com box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian pointed out. The horror sequel "Silent Hill: Revelation 3-D" from Open Road Films debuted at No. 5 with $8 million and the Paramount Halloween comedy "Fun Size" arrived in 10th place with just over $4 million. "Chasing Mavericks," an inspirational surfing drama from Fox 2000, didn't even open in the top 12 ? it came in at No. 13 with $2.2 million.

The World Series might have been a factor in keeping folks away from the theaters; also, potential moviegoers along the East Coast in the path of Hurricane Sandy might have stayed home this weekend.

"The whole marketplace felt more like September than October. Back in September, we had four down weekends in a row. There was no momentum in the marketplace," Dergarabedian said. "When a holdover is No. 1, it reflects a lack of strength in the marketplace. Every week should have a new movie topping the chart."

As for the philosophical, centuries-spanning "Cloud Atlas," he said: "To have a) a big budget, b) Tom Hanks and c) it's a big, epic film, it doesn't necessarily follow that it's going to be a big box office hit. I admire that they went for it."

But there's hope on the horizon with the animated comedy "Wreck-It Ralph" coming next weekend, the latest James Bond film, "Skyfall," opening Nov. 9 and the final installment in the "Twilight" saga due out Nov. 16.

"This is just one of those box office weekends we'd rather forget," Dergarabedian said. "Unless you're 'Argo.'"

Estimated ticket sales are for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "Argo," $12.4 million.

2. "Hotel Transylvania," $9.5 million.

3. "Cloud Atlas," $9.4 million.

4. "Paranormal Activity 4," $8.7 million.

5. (tie) "Silent Hill: Revelation 3-D," $8 million.

6. "Taken 2," $8 million.

7. "Here Comes the Boom," $5.5 million.

8. "Sinister," $5.07 million.

9. "Alex Cross," $5.05 million.

10. "Fun Size," $4.1 million.

Gunny battles cancer, prepares for marathon - Marine Corps News ...

Gunnery Sgt. Jerry Embry and his nurse, Agnes Sicat, know what it?s like to face hurdles. In 2011, Embry, a motor transport mechanic and 22-year Marine, was diagnosed with a form of blood cancer known as non-Hodgkin?s Lymphoma.

Since Embry?s diagnosis, Sicat, a nurse at Walter Reed National Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., has been there every step of the way.

On Sunday, they?ll face another challenge together: the 37th Marine Corps Marathon.

?Jerry is nothing short of inspiring,? Sicat said. ?He is one of my heroes; positive, strong and of course a Marine who acts like it?s no big deal.?

Although Sicat was not Embry?s primary nurse, they became instant friends.

?Words just flowed,? Embry said.

Known as the ?People?s Marathon,? the event is the world?s largest to not offer prize money to participants. Each year, thousands of runners from around the world flock to the nation?s capital or participate in shadow runs in remote places such as Afghanistan and Kuwait.

This year?s marathon is expected to draw the largest number of participants in the race?s history. About 30,000 runners between the ages of 14 and 86 from every state ? and 54 countries ? will race through the streets of northern Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Embry, 39, has deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan and South Korea, and said the demands of being a Marine have helped keep him in top physical shape and probably had something to do with how well he responded to treatment.

Embry has undergone about seven chemotherapy treatments since his diagnosis.

Sicat said Embry?s positive attitude has made a positive impact on those around him, including her.

?Jerry taught me the importance of good humor and had the whole room laughing all of the time,? Sicat said.

Today, the cancer is virtually undetectable in his blood, though non-Hodgkin Lymphoma is rare for his age and considered a chronic condition because it can re-emerge.

For now, though, Embry and Sicat have their sights set on the finish line.

?I never accepted the fact that I was sick, nor did I ever fear that I wouldn?t beat it,? Embry said.

Opel restructuring talks could last into 2013: union

HAMBURG (Reuters) - General Motors' loss-making unit Opel may need between two and three more months to reach a deal with German unions on a restructuring plan that could see thousands of job cuts and the closure of its Bochum factory in 2017, a union spokeswoman said.

Management of Ruesselsheim-based Opel and workers had agreed on Friday to extend a previous October 26 deadline for the negotiations which are being conducted on the basis that all four German plants will be protected from closure through 2016.

This intention could be abandoned at any time though, depending on the course of the negotiations, the union spokeswoman told Reuters on Sunday, without being more specific. There's now no firm deadline on the talks, she added.

Opel has a signed contract with IG Metall that protects the four plants from closure through the end of 2014. Management had said in June that the Bochum plant, which employs 3,300 workers, was "broadly expected to be closed" once that deal expired.

GM's European operations have lost a total of $16 billion over the past dozen years despite repeated rounds of job cuts.

With Europe's car market tumbling, labor representatives at Opel are under increasing pressure to accept deep cuts, even more so after rival Ford's decision this week to close two assembly plants in Europe, reducing capacity by 355,000 vehicles and its local workforce by 13 percent.

One of IG Metall's key bargaining chips in the talks with Opel management has been that it agreed in June to let Opel defer payment of an industrywide 4.3 percent wage increase to its German workers until October 31. That has allowed Opel to hold on to more cash as it tries to return to profitability.

The union spokeswoman said on Sunday that both sides had agreed on Friday that employees would receive all backdated wages for May through October with the November pay cheque.

After that, the 4.3 percent pay raise will be deferred indefinitely, she said, noting that workers at Opel's German plants were notified of the plans at weekend gatherings.
