Oil rises in Asia as China manufacturing improves

BANGKOK (AP) ? The price of oil rose Thursday after preliminary data showed China's manufacturing activity expanded for the first time in 13 months, a positive sign for the global economy.

Benchmark crude for January delivery was up 13 cents to $87.51 per barrel at late afternoon Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 63 cents to finish at $87.38 a barrel on Wednesday.

Oil prices were responding to the release of HSBC Corp.'s monthly Purchasing Managers' Index for November, which showed a reading of 50.4 on a 100-point scale on which numbers over 50 indicate expansion.

That was a moderate improvement from October's 49.5 and boosted hopes that the world's No. 2 economy was finally emerging from the deep slump it has been mired in since the 2008 financial crisis.

"I think that number encouraged the traders to bet on rising oil prices," said Ken Hasegawa, energy analyst at Newedge brokerage in Tokyo.

Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, fell 21 cents to $110.65 a barrel in London.

In other energy futures trading in New York:

? Heating oil rose 2.4 cents to $3.072 a gallon.

? Wholesale gasoline added 2.1 cents to $2.709 a gallon.

? Natural gas gained 6 cents to $3.892 per 1,000 cubic feet.

(AP) ? When the tiny desert nation of Qatar was chosen to host the latest round of United Nations climate change negotiations, environmentalists were stunned.

Talks were already in trouble, and now the high-level discussions were moving to a member of OPEC that had shown little interest in climate change and appointed a former oil minister to lead the negotiations, which start Monday. The country's economic boom, driven by vast oil and gas reserves, has led to free electricity for citizens and an abundance of gas-guzzling SUVs in the capital, Doha. It has also made Qatar the world's highest per capita carbon dioxide emitter.

"Nongovernment organizations had mixed feelings about it," said Wael Hmaidan, a Lebanese activist who is director of the Climate Action Network. "Some were very concerned and found it a threat knowing that Qatar has not been engaged in the climate change negotiations, while others found it an opportunity to get the climate debate higher on the political agenda of the region."

Activists complain Qatar has shown little leadership so far and been much less transparent than previous hosts of the annual climate conference.

Among the most vocal has been advocacy group Avaaz, which asserts that "having one of the OPEC leaders in charge of climate talks is like asking Dracula to look after a blood bank." It also criticized Qatari leaders for attending a big oil conference just ahead of the talks, a sign its priorities may misplaced.

But publicly, delegates have been careful to avoid criticizing the emirate. The top United Nations climate official said preparations are on track.

"I'm not concerned," said Christiana Figueres, the executive secretary of the United Nations Climate Change secretariat. "We are very grateful. Qatar not only offered, but literally fought for the opportunity and privilege of hosting."

"We have been impressed with work of the Qatar team and how they have brought themselves very quickly up to speed with the complexity of the issues," she said.

Hosting the conference is part of the tiny Gulf nation's campaign to project itself as a powerhouse on the world stage, after winning the bid to host the 2022 World Cup and backing rebellions in Libya and Syria.

It also offers the ruling family an opportunity to change perceptions about a region that in the past has seemed concerned only with protecting its vast oil and gas reserves from the impact of any climate agreement.

Qatar and its Persian Gulf neighbors insist that portrayal is outdated.

The United Arab Emirates has, for example, endorsed the extension of the Kyoto Protocol, which limits the greenhouse emissions of industrialized countries. It was also the first Gulf nation to sign on to the Copenhagen Accord supporting a long-term deal to reign in emissions.

Even Saudi Arabia, which in the past led opposition to a global agreement capping greenhouse gas emissions, has moderated its position and shaken up its negotiating team.

Leaders in the Gulf also are more vocally acknowledging the impact of climate change, endorsing the science that shows emissions are on rise and recognizing they are not immune to the impact of global warming. They also are promising to do their part to combat it.

"I describe Qatar as the epicenter of climate change. There is no water, no food. It's barren desert," said Fahad Bin Mohammed al-Attiya, chairman of Doha's COP18 organizing committee. "Any problems to harvest season or productivity outside the Gulf would immediately impact our ability to have access to food at reasonable global prices."

Qatar and the UAE have rolled out green building codes in an effort to shift away from energy-wasting high-rises that dominate the skyline. Qatar says it will produce 20 percent of its energy from renewables by 2024, while Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the UAE have announced plans to invest heavily in solar power.

The UAE, which has set a target to generate 7 percent of its electricity from renewables by 2020, is home to the International Renewable Energy Agency and the government-run Masdar Institute, which has built the first phase of a pre-planned city powered by renewable sources. The UAE has also announced plans to build four nuclear reactors, the first of which should be operational by 2017.

"We don't want to continue to be seen as only an exporter of oil through barrels or gas through pipelines," said Sultan Ahmed al-Jaber, the chief executive officer of Masdar and UAE's Special Envoy for Energy and Climate Change.

"Our approach should be an energy mix approach where oil and gas continues to play a role, nuclear continues to play a catalytic role but the only energy source that will grow over time will be renewable energy," he said. "That is simply because the technology is maturing and the world better recognizes the need for advancing this technology."

Activists, though, want to see Gulf countries go further at the climate talks.

Former Irish President Mary Robinson said they should commit to voluntary emissions targets, like former conference host Mexico did. Gulf nations' total emissions are a fraction of China's and the United States', but setting targets would help inspire others to take action.

"Leadership of the Gulf countries is very important" she said at a meeting addressing climate change in Dubai.

Activists say they also could do more to cut fuel subsidies that make bottled water more expensive that gasoline in many Gulf countries, policies partly enacted to keep the lid on political dissent.

Others have called on the Gulf ? which has some of the world's highest per capita incomes thanks to its vast petrodollars ? to contribute to the U.N.'s Green Climate Fund. The fund aims to channel $100 billion annually by 2020 to aid to poor countries. So far, Gulf countries have contributed nothing.

"Qatar has a GDP per capita which is three times ours in Europe," EU Climate Commissioner Connie Hedegaard told The Associated Press. "Should ... also the Qataris come up with some financing? So we have tried to encourage them. I don't know what the response will be, but let's see."

Expectations are also high that the Gulf countries will play a more productive and public role in negotiations, after years in which only the UAE countered Saudi Arabia's obstructionist tactics and its widely-ridiculed demands that OPEC members be compensated for loss of oil revenues in any agreement ? a move criticized by impoverished nations who would be forced to compete with the world's top oil producer for aid.

Those views have been moderated, al-Attiya said, as Gulf countries recognize efforts to diversify their economies are not as difficult and costly as they once seemed. Still, Gulf countries led by Saudi Arabia are demanding measures in any agreement that would assist them in shifting away from fossil fuels.

The Gulf countries want to have the right to use a diversity of energy sources, including both fossil fuels and renewables, said al-Attiya.

"It's not an excuse," al-Attiya said. "Every country wants that right, provided that right to diversify is governed by rules that say, for instance, you are not going to diversify at the expense of causing more damage to the environment. "

Japan brands fend off rivals at China auto show

GUANGZHOU, China (AP) ? Global automakers and their Chinese rivals put on sleek displays of new cars at a major auto show Thursday in Guangzhou, the southern Chinese stronghold of Japanese brands that have been hard hit by tensions between Tokyo and Beijing.

Nissan Motor Co., Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. were among the dozens of brands showcasing new vehicles at the auto show in bustling, prosperous Guangzhou, near Hong Kong.

The beleaguered Japanese automakers have suffered sharp drops in their China sales since a territorial dispute over East China Sea islands flared in September, inflaming anti-Japanese sentiment and sparking sometimes violent protests. But they didn't shy away from showing off new models, going head to head with less established rivals sensing an opportunity to seize market share.

The show caps a year of relatively slow sales for carmakers in China, where competition is stiffening after years of white hot growth. Despite the slowdown, the country remains the world's biggest auto market, underscoring its importance to carmakers.

"Although the automobile market of China confronts great uncertainties, its great potentiality still makes us confident and eager for the future," said Yao Yiming, deputy general manager of one of Honda Motor Co.'s local joint ventures, Guangqi Honda. Honda unveiled several models for the China market including the Fit Hybrid.

Foreign marques like PSA Peugeot Citroen, a relative newcomer to China, also brought new models designed specifically for the Chinese market, which is having an increasingly large influence on auto designs.

The anti-Japanese sentiment is "of course" giving a boost to the French automaker's sales, said Jean-Yves Dossal, the company's director of Asian operations. "Not that much, but still this is true that some Chinese customers are scared a little bit of buying a Japanese car."

The company's new models include the Peugeot 3008, a crossover sport utility vehicle that is more aggressively styled than the European version, and the Citroen C4L, a midsized sedan that's only sold in China.

Why wait for Black Friday? Deals you can get right now.

Terms like 'Black Friday' and 'Cyber Monday' are getting outmoded as retailers offer specials earlier than Thanksgiving. JoS. A. Bank, for one, has a sale that runs through Wednesday.

It's official: With Black Friday just around the corner, retailers are falling over themselves to attract your attention ? and to distract you from things like work, family, and football.

The consumerist frenzy known as the holiday shopping season is already in full swing.

But for US shoppers, the bargain-hunt map is a bit fuzzy. Do the best opportunities lie in wait at stores this Friday, or online? More to the point, do the terms "Black Friday" and "Cyber Monday" mean much anymore?

Those labels, while they still carry some meaning, are no longer to be taken too literally. Yes, there'll be some very reduced price tags awaiting early-morning shoppers on Friday. And yes, lots of consumers will use their work computers for some personal shopping Monday, even as they're getting back to their day jobs.

But the blurring lines of these concepts is also more apparent than ever this year. Talk of "Black Thursday" and "Cyber Weekend" hints at the fading of sharp distinctions. Big-name stores like Wal-Mart are pushing to lure customers on Thanksgiving night, and many have sales running early in the week.

Often, the bargain you can find in a store will be matched online, with free shipping to boot.

Technology adds to the mix: Smart-phone apps allow consumers to quickly compare in-store and online prices.

?In-store sales at major retailers this week will be significantly influenced by mobile applications,? marketing expert Kenneth Wisnefski said in a statement released this week by the company he founded, WebiMax.

The mobile apps, by the way, include Amazon?s Price Check, which allows you to scan a bar code in a store and then view prices for the same product online, or to read online product reviews before buying.

Bottom line: By all means, go out and shop on Friday if you want, but don't neglect the opportunities that may be at your fingertips or in stores from now forward.

Some examples:

? Menswear purveyor JoS. A. Bank has a "3 days only!" sale that runs through Wednesday, with 60 percent off suits, sport coats, and outerwear, and "40 percent off everything else online."

? Similarly, electronics retailer Newegg has a "Pre-Black Friday Frenzy." The online store offers price matching, and it pledges that you'll be shopping "at prices that won't drop lower on Black Friday." How's that for an eager sales pitch?

? Sam's Club held a two-hour "Exclusive VIP Member Event" Sunday, for Business and Business Plus members, according to BFAds.net, a tracker of Black Friday deals.

? If you want a pair of black sunglasses (or another color) before Friday, the Oakley Vault has offered up to 65 percent off in its Pre-Black Friday Sale, according to the website Dealnews.

Caregiver Blessings at Thanksgiving

?Let us be grateful to people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.??? ~Marcel Proust

This seems like such a fitting quote as we approach Thanksgiving. As caregivers, we fall into our routines and do what it takes to get through the day. The road is bumpy, and it?s not for the faint of heart. On those occasions when we feel like burying our heads in the sand or running away from home, it?s easy to lose sight of our blessings.

Giving Thanks

The Thanksgiving holiday reminds us to step back from the chaos of day-to-day life and think about all that we have to be grateful for.? It?s a time to remember that while things may not be all peaches and cream, each day is filled with its own little miracles. As Mr. Proust so eloquently stated, it is often the people in our lives we are most thankful for.

This year, I feel indebted to the wonderful human beings who care for my mom day in and day out, happy days and not so happy days. They are our family in every sense of the word. For them, the job never ends. Even at the end of an exhausting 12-hour shift, they go home and worry about their dear ladies. I can only dream of displaying the patience and selflessness that they show every single day.

Faithful Family and Friends

I?m also extremely blessed to have the most wonderful daughter a mother could ask for. When my head is going in a million directions and I?m at the height of worry and frustration, she brings me back to earth with the wisdom of an old soul. She?s a source of strength, she keeps me laughing, she?s my voice of reason, and most importantly, she makes me want to be a better person.

While we?re talking about family, I would be remiss if I didn?t mention my dad. Living four hours away, he gets the short end of the stick but never complains. Knowing that he understands why I have to be here with mom helps to take some of the weight off my shoulders. He?ll never know what a gift that is.

My blessings continue with the best, most supportive, understanding friends in the world. These are the people who graciously allow me to cry on their shoulder when I need to, always have a hug to spare, and would truly do anything for us. When I?m with these people, I can be me ? the good, the bad, and the ugly ? without fearing that they may walk away when times get tough.

In addition to amazing friends, I?m thankful to have a compassionate, supportive work family. They?ve seen me at my best, and they?ve seen me at my worst, tears and all. Whether I need a shoulder to cry on, a sympathetic ear, or someone to cover a meeting for me while I run off to handle an issue with my mom, they are there.

My Inspiration

Finally, I?m grateful for the woman without whom I wouldn?t be here. I feel like my beautiful mama has taught me as much about life and love in the past six years as she had as I was growing up. Without even realizing it, she?s taught me patience, hope, and faith. She has helped me realize that I?m stronger than I think I am. She?s taught me not to take anything for granted and has shown me how to appreciate every tiny, beautiful moment that we share. She?s shown me that when you treat people with kindness, it comes back to you tenfold. And most importantly, she?s taught me to love at a level I never knew possible.

I hope you?re able to take some time this week to count your blessings. Even when circumstances are far from perfect, we can find things to be grateful for. Here?s wishing everyone a beautiful, safe, and blessed Thanksgiving.

Cat show will bring family-friendly, feline fun to Kenner this weekend ...

The International Cat Association presents a cat show at the Hilton New Orleans Airport this weekend (Nov. 23-25). Previously registered household pets are welcome to compete. (Photo by Erin Root)

Cat lovers of greater New Orleans will flock to The International Cat Association (TICA) show, 'Voodoo Cats,' this weekend (Nov. 23-25) at the Hilton New Orleans Airport. Voodoo Cats is presented by the Lafayette-based Evangeline County Cat Fanciers, and features 18 rings of judging, themed cat costume contests, and special divisions for junior exhibitors and household pets.

Casual spectators are welcome Friday (Nov. 23) from 4 to 9 p.m., Saturday (Nov. 24) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday (Nov. 25) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission costs $5 for adults, $4 for children ages 3 to 10, and is free for children under age 3. Upon entry, attendees will be directed to exhibitor areas and judging rings. Each entered cat will be judged a total of 18 times over the three-day show, with "best of the best" awards given out Sunday (Nov. 25).

Anne Paul, who is managing this show with Wendy Klamm, shared what is so special about the exhibitions. TICA sports an international crowd of cats, exhibitors and judges. Moreover, the inclusion of a household category allows casual cat fanciers to enter their beloved pets, including rescued and adopted animals. "They're not pedigree cats, but they're going to compete in a separate division from championship cats," Paul said.

On Sunday (Nov. 25), the show will feature a junior exhibitor ring judged by Fate Mays. Exhibitors under the age of 18 will compete in the junior division. Paul's own daughters will be competing Sunday, entering their household cats for judging. She considers the junior exhibition a character-building exercise "It challenges their knowledge on the cat and lets the parent know where they're lacking in terms of teaching the kids with the cats. It's an all-around quality family time, and it's learning the responsibilities of taking care of these animals. It makes them a better person."

The Evangeline Country Cat Fanciers believe in responsible pet ownership and donate to charities caring for the unwanted cat population. A portion of the proceeds from this weekend's cat show will be donated to local shelters and animal welfare organizations. Additionally, attendees who wish to bring a furry friend home will be able to find rescue cats available for on-site adoption.

On Saturday (Nov. 24), the cat show will celebrate the Voodoo theme with three special contests. Georgia Morgan, founder of The International Cat Association, will judge the special events: a cage decorating contest for best voodoo theme, a best dressed Marie Laveau costume contest (for female felines) and a best dressed Jazzy Cat costume contest (for male felines).

If you have any questions about this event, call Anne Paul at 337.488.3977. (Please, no phone calls before 9 a.m. or after 9 p.m.)

DeBord Report : California foreclosures and short sales are a ...

Reed Saxon

A foreclosure sign in Pasadena. Foreclosures and short sales are a smaller part of the market in October, according to the California Association of Realtors.

California?s real estate market has been anything but healthy since the housing bubble burst. But there are now signs that the patient is on the mend.?And really, what a difference a year makes! Last October, so-called ?distressed sales? made up half of all monthly transactions in California real estate.

In this case, "distressed" means foreclosures and short sales. Short sales in particular have become popular. That's when the lender accepts less for the house that what the borrower owes.

A year later, the numbers have been reversed. The California Association of Realtors now reports that in October, distressed sales fell to just over a third of the market. Los Angeles County mirrored this statewide trend.

One reason why distressed sales are falling is that there simply aren?t as many of them on the market. There was only a 2-month supply of foreclosures in September and a 3-month supply for short sales. Those inventories could rise as banks put more foreclosures in the market and borrowers who remain underwater on their mortgages, just not as much as a year ago, decide to go for a short sale.?
