Are you struggling with the job search?? When it gets to the stage that even you are bored of reading your resume maybe it?s time to consider sprucing things up a bit!
A well-constructed resume can mean the difference between getting your hands on that coveted position and receiving the dreaded ?we regret to inform you?? email.
I sat down with career expert Nicole Williams to find out what it is that makes a resume stand out and really speak to the prospective employer.
Nicole?s first rule is to confine your resume to one page and deliver a direct one-line objective at the top of the page.? She also advises that when applying for a specific position you tailor your resume to that particular company.
Yep- That means no more bulk emailing the same resume. ?Sure its a pain to customize for each employer- but the idea is to get the job you want ? right? ??Need another reason to customize? Hiring managers tell me computer screeners, the software that scan through the initial wave of job candidates, often block resumes that do not show a strong correlation with the posted job description qualifications. ?So read the description and make sure your application and resume use the same terminology as that description, or you?ll never make it to the interview phase.

In order to be identified as current, make sure you are in sync with the company with whom you are applying for a position.? To do this Nicole recommends visiting the company?s website and becoming familiar with their language and vocabulary.? Reading press releases is another good way to get to know the company.? Then be sure to use this same style and vocabulary in your resume and cover letter.? You want to be immediately identified as a good fit for that company.? Using the same language shows you ?get? the company- which will help them ?get? you.
A gentle reminder: It?s all about what they are in to, not you.? Knowing what is relevant to them is key.?? While you?re resume is essentially about you, it is only about the parts of you that are in direct reference to what they care about.? Every sentence in your resume should be relevant to the employer ? keep filler to a minimum!
Nicole?s final tip:? When in doubt about what to include ask yourself, ?how am I and my experience going to help this business succeed and make more money??
