Malicious Android apps proliferate; Google not doing enough

Sun, 30/12/2012 - 11:11 by Dinesh Dhiman

The number of malicious applications on Google Android operating system is increasing at an alarming rate and Google seems to be clueless on how to tackle the issue.

How users can protect their Android devices from getting infected:

1. Avoid downloading from links or Third Party marketplaces

2. Use a security software

3. Apply the security patches as soon as these are released

App scanner fails to track most malicious apps
Google showed some spine by unveiling Bouncer, an app scanner that was aimed at filtering out malware from its app market. However, experts were quick to point out that the Bouncer is not delivering. It could filter only 15 percent of all the malicious apps uploaded into its app store.

Google acquired Virus Total in a bid to rein-in malware in its app store. Given the ever-increasing number of malicious apps, this move too seems to be not working for the search engine giant.

Scary numbers
Security firms are coming up with frightening numbers that indicate the acuteness of the problem. Jupiter Networks reports that there is an increase of 3,325 percent in Android-specific malware as compared to the last year. TrustGo presents a less-scary picture, though it reports a whopping 580 percent increase in the malware in the same period.

As per TrustGo, high-risk apps were downloaded 175 million times from the Google Play Store. High-risk apps are not necessarily malware, but these tend to do plenty of damage to the users? devices. These apps can make fraudulent transactions, and reveal the location and phone number of the users, exposing them to spam and telemarketing calls.

Besides that, these high-risk apps can expose Android phones to malware, replace the home page on browser, and add their own icons. Users accessing third party marketplaces to download apps are particularly at a heightened risk.

What users can do
It makes perfect sense to remain cautious while downloading any app from Google Play Store or any third party marketplace. Users should avoid downloading apps from links and stick to the official marketplace, instead. They ought to have a security software installed on their Android devices and install official security patches as soon as these are released.

Alistair Overeem pokes fun at Junior dos Santos during UFC 155

Before Junior Dos Santos' bout with Cain Velasquez was over, another opponent was poking fun of the former champ. Alistair Overeem was scheduled to fight dos Santos in May, but was suspended by the Nevada Athletic Commission because of high testosterone levels before the fight.

Overeem tweeted:

Ouch! Though Overeem has a beef with dos Santos, he has to get through Antonio Silva on Feb. 2 first. Overeem applied for a license this week. He will have to appear before a hearing on Jan. 8 before he is approved.

If dos Santos and Overeem do end up fighting, it won't be for the title. Velasquez beat dos Santos in a one-sided, five-round decision on Saturday night at UFC 155.

Sheamus Talks Ending The Undertaker's Streak, Relationship with Regal, Troops and More

Sheamus recently spoke to Jonathan McLarty of The Flagship for an interview. Here are a few highlights.

Highlights from recent visit with the troops in Norfolk: We had a great time with them, actually. We got to hang out and play dodge ball with some of the groups. We got to walk around the USS Boise (SSN 764) submarine, the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) aircraft carrier and the USS Porter (DDG 78). It?s amazing to meet all of these Sailors ? to see how young and enthusiastic they are, how much they love serving their country and how much they love their job. They take great passion and pride in serving their country. It?s really great to see.

Who Sheamus looked up to as a kid growing up: : I was really a big fan of WWE as a kid. I used to love watching ?Mr. Perfect? (Curt Hennig), ?The Million Dollar Man? Ted DiBiase, ?Macho Man? Randy Savage and Bret Hart. I?ve always been a fan of numerous Superstars and have taken inspiration from different guys in different ways, but those are really the four I loved watching as a kid.

Relationship with William Regal: One of the first guys to really text me or call me up was William Regal. He offered to help me and have me travel with him. We have the same sense of humor, same pop culture background. We got on right away from the start. He?s been a great help to me by watching my matches and critiquing them. There have been others like Triple H ? Arn Anderson as well. I?m always motivated to pick the brain of people who have been so successful. Great number of minds and talents in WWE and they?re all at your disposal. It?s definitely helped me to progress faster than I would have on my own. ? It?s about drive ? never be happy with what you do. You can?t rest on your laurels because you?re only as good as your last match. There are a lot of hungry Superstars ready to come in here and want to knock you off your spot.

Future goals in wrestling: Foremost, I want to win the World Heavyweight Championship back from The Big Show. I will get that opportunity in Richmond at SmackDown TV. I would love to do a WrestleMania match with The Undertaker. I don?t know how many Mania matches he has left in him, but I would love to be the guy who breaks that streak.

Favorite ice cream: I am a big ice cream fan, so this will be hard one. Birthday cake ice cream is my favorite. The first time I came over to the states, I was 18 and had never heard of Ben & Jerry?s. I was training at the time and I remember looking at the ?Chunky Monkey? carton where it said ?Fat Content per Ice Cream Tub = 16 grams.? I thought, ?Hey, there?s only 16 g of fat in this tub!? So, after a few weeks of eating Ben & Jerry?s, I realized it was 16 g of fat per serving. There were about six servings in one tub and I was eating 100 grams of fat every couple of days. I was wondering why I wasn?t losing any weight!

No Buddy Left Behind: Bringing US Troops' Dogs and Cats Safely Home from the Combat Zone (Audiobook) By Terri Crisp, C. J. Hurn
English | 2011 | ISBN: 1455121630 | 8 hours and 19 minutes | M4B | 219 MB
The love of a dog or cat helps heal soldiers' emotional trauma. One very special woman and program reunites them after the war.
''I have sacrificed a lot to serve my country. All that I ask is to be allowed to bring home the incredible dog that wandered into my life here in Iraq and prevented me from becoming terribly calloused towards life.'' --a soldier requesting help from Operation Baghdad Pups

No Buddy Left Behind is an animal book with a difference. It is not only about rescued dogs and cats but also about US soldiers trying to survive the horrors of war and readjust to life back home. It unveils the life-altering relationships American troops serving in the Middle East share with the stray dogs and cats they rescue from the brutalities of war. Overcoming monumental obstacles, Terri Crisp makes it her mission to save these wartime ''buddies,'' get them out of danger, and bring them home to the soldiers who love them.

So, how does someone get animals out of a country at war when normal resources are lacking and every step of a plan to transport animals could get you arrested, kidnapped, or blown apart? As Crisp soon learns, each rescue mission from first to last is a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants experience, and no animal is truly safe until its paws touch American soil. Terri and her team have saved the lives of 223 dogs and 42 cats befriended by military personnel since February 2008 -- and No Buddy Left Behind finally tells this story.

Mantra takes the stage as arts and entertainment partners

Mantra forges a relationship with The Mousetrap company. Image supplied

Mantra forges a relationship with The Mousetrap company: Sales Manager Beau Keller and Sales/Marketing Executive Michelle Doyle Jones with members of?The Mousetrap Company.

As any touring performer knows, moving interstate for work means packing your suitcase for several months (or years!) and living in what is known in the industry as ?Company Accommodation?. Making a new apartment your home away from home every few months is not the easiest of tasks, but Mantra Hotels are planning on helping artists across the nation do just that as they forge partnerships with major Arts and Entertainment industry brands.

The most recent partnership is with the acclaimed Diamond Anniversary Australasian Tour of The Mousetrap,?which opened in Brisbane last?night.

The show?s production team, cast and crew will make Mantra South Bank their home throughout the season at QPAC?s Playhouse Theatre just as they did at?Mantra on the Park in Melbourne and Mantra on Northbourne in Canberra during their seasons in the southern capitals.

?The Mantra Apartment properties provide a great opportunity for our companies to feel as much at home as possible as they tour the country? said Producer Louise Withers, praising the partnership for benefitting the company both commercially and personally.

Mantra?s Beau Keller who heads up the Sport & Entertainment sales portfolio, told AussieTheatre that the Mantra Arts Partnerships began several years ago, but that his personal interest in the arts has helped develop the idea into a more solid?model.

?Mantra have always been supportive of touring shows around Australia? he?said.

?I guess since I have come on board the fact that I love theatre and seeing shows helps because I have been able to break down the correct door and speak to the right people to get the accommodation partnerships contracts all started.?

Keller explained that while the main partnership involve Mantra accommodating cast and crew and management team, they also assist with ?in kind? marketing of the?shows.

?For The?Mousetrap we have porters, key wallets and book marks all printed and distrubuted through the regions hotels well in advance of the show, as well as other inside hotel features such as tv showing ads for the shows?, he?said.

To date, Mantra Hotels have provided full sponsorship, marketing and accommodation partnerships with major productions such as, MAMMA MIA!, Hairspray, the English National Ballet and Global Creatures? How To Train Your Dragon.

The relationship with Global Creatures will continue in 2013 when Mantra will accommodate cast and crew for War Horse and King Kong. Other cast and crew accommodation partnerships have also been forged with Cirque du Soleil, Moonshadow and Annie the Musical?in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra. With hotels located in all capital cities, Mantra is well placed to accommodate national touring productions.

?Mantra hopes to become the 1st choice for current producers and directors to use us as accommodation provider when they are putting together tours around Australia because our hotels are perfect for long stay guests?, Keller said.

Mantra?s Arts and Entertainment partnerships don?t end with the performers and crew ? as official accommodation partner for The Mousetrap,?Mantra is also offering Brisbane theatre goers?ticket and accommodation packages.

The Mousetrap will play at The Playhouse, QPAC until 20 January

Say Cheese! Mars Rover Curiosity Snaps Amazing Self-Portrait

NASA has snapped its most amazing self-portrait yet of the Curiosity rover on Mars, showing the robot posing with its ultimate destination: a huge Martian mountain.

The new view of Curiosity on Mars is actually a mosaic of dozens of high-definition color photos taken by the rover between Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. The image shows Curiosity surrounded by the tracks of its wheels, with the 3-mile-high (5 kilometers) Mount Sharp rising into the sky in the distance.

NASA featured the latest Curiosity portrait as its image of the day Thursday (Dec. 27) after releasing the photo earlier this month.

The prominent Mount Sharp is the central peak of Curiosity's vast Gale Crater landing site. Another mountain in the image, on the rover's left, makes up the northern wall of the expansive crater.

To create the eye-popping Mars photo, Curiosity used its Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI), a powerful camera mounted at the end of the rover's robotic arm. Curiosity turned the camera on itself much like a human tourist might when traveling alone, snapping a series of photos that rover team members then stitched together into a high-definition composite view.

The rover had to move its robotic arm through more than 50 positions in a single day to capture its entire car-size body on camera. ?NASA scientists used a test version of Curiosity on Earth to practice the Martian photo session.

NASA unveiled an earlier version of Curiosity portrait, composed out of 55 separate images, in early November, but the latest view includes significantly more detail and a wider view.

The Mars rover Curiosity is headed toward a spot near the base of Mount Sharp called Glenelg, and will continue to perform experiments along the way. The $2.5 billion rover's primary mission is to determine if its Gale crater landing site could have ever supported primitive microbial life.

FILE - In a Tuesday, June 12, 2012 file photo, former President George H.W. Bush, and his wife, former first lady Barbara Bush, arrive for the premiere of HBO's new documentary on his life near the family compound in Kennebunkport, Maine. Bush spokesman Jim McGrath said Wednesday, Dec. 26. 2012 that doctors at the Houston hospital where Bush has been treated for a month remain ?cautiously optimistic? that he will recover. Still, no discharge date has been set, and McGrath says that doctors are being cautious because at Bush?s age ?sometimes issues crop up that are beyond anybody?s ability to discern or foretell.?(AP Photo/Charles Krupa, File)

(AP) ? Former President George H.W. Bush remained in intensive care at a Houston hospital on Friday but his condition continues to improve, a spokesman said.

"The President is alert and, as always, in good spirits ? and his exchanges with doctors and nurses now include singing," family spokesman Jim McGrath said in a brief statement.

The 88-year-old Bush, the nation's oldest living former president, was admitted at Methodist Hospital in Houston on Nov. 23 because of a bronchitis-related cough, after spending about a week there earlier in November for the same condition.

The cough was mostly resolved by the time he was moved to intensive care on Sunday for treatment of a fever that doctors were having difficulty controlling.

"The Bushes thank everyone for their prayers and good wishes and, like their doctors, are cautiously optimistic that the current course of treatment will be effective," McGrath said.

On Thursday, a longtime Bush aide tried to quell concern about Bush's condition by saying the former president likely would advise well-wishers to "put the harps back in the closet."

Jean Becker, Bush's Houston chief of staff, said the former president would likely be in the hospital for a while, noting his age and that "he had a terrible?case of bronchitis which then triggered a series of complications."

Becker said "most of the civilized world" contacted her after word spread that Bush had been placed in intensive care unit.

"Someday President George H.W. Bush might realize how beloved he is, but of course one of the reasons why he is so beloved is because he has no idea," Becker said in the at-times lighthearted statement that made multiple references to jokes and the former president's sense of humor.

Updates on his health are being limited out of respect for the family, she said.

The family had hoped Bush would have been well enough to spend Christmas at home. His cough eased, but he developed a persistent fever. His condition has since been downgraded to "guarded."

The former president has been visited by family and friends, including longtime friend James Baker III, his former Secretary of State. Bush's daughter, Dorothy, arrived Wednesday from her home in Bethesda, Md. Other visitors have included his sons George W. Bush, the 43rd president, and Jeb Bush, the former Florida governor.

Bush and his wife, Barbara, live in Houston during the winter and spend their summers at a home in Kennebunkport, Maine.

Bush, the 41st president, had served two terms as Ronald Reagan's vice president when he was elected in 1988. Four years later, after a term highlighted by the success of the 1991 Gulf War in Kuwait, he lost to Democrat Bill Clinton amid voters' concerns about the economy.

Bush was a naval aviator in World War II ? at one point the youngest in the Navy ? and was shot down over the Pacific. He's skydived on at least three of his birthdays since leaving the White House, most recently when he turned 85.

Bush, also a former U.S. ambassador to China and CIA director, suffers from a form of Parkinson's disease that forced him in recent years to use a motorized scooter or wheelchair for mobility.

Senate approves $60.4 billion Sandy aid bill

(AP) ? The Senate has approved a $60.4 billion emergency spending package for Hurricane Sandy recovery that was backed by Democrats.

The 61-33 vote Friday sends the measure to the House, where the bill faces uncertain prospects. House GOP leaders appear reluctant to move quickly on a big spending bill in the final days of a lame duck session that's being dominated by talks to avert the so-called fiscal cliff.

Republican leaders favor a smaller aid package to pay for immediate Sandy recovery needs, saying they need more time to consider any additional aid.

Sandy battered the East Coast in late October. It was the most costly natural disaster since Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and one of the worst storms ever in the Northeast.

Egyptians fret over economy after rancorous vote on constitution

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt prepared to announce on Tuesday the result of a vote on a new constitution that Islamist President Mohamed Mursi hails as a step toward stability in a country beset by political and economic crisis.

But critics say that by ramming through the basic law, Mursi has angered his liberal, leftist and Christian opponents, and may have squandered any chance of building a broad consensus on tax rises needed to rein in a crushing budget deficit.

Unofficial tallies from Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood showed the charter was approved by a 64 percent majority. The electoral commission will announce the official result at 1700 GMT, with the final numbers widely expected to confirm earlier estimates.

Mursi believes the constitution will end a protracted period of turmoil that has haunted the most populous Arab nation since the fall of military-backed strongman Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

But ordinary people and some commentators worry that Mursi's approach in pushing through the contentious text will only galvanize his rivals to capitalize on any public backlash against austerity rather than help sell reforms to the nation.

Hossam El-Din Ali, a 35-year-old newspaper vendor in central Cairo, said he agreed the new constitution would help bring some political stability but like many others he feared the possible austerity measures lying ahead.

"People don't want higher prices. People are upset about this," he said. "There is recession, things are not moving. But I am wishing for the best, God willing."

If the "yes" vote is confirmed, a parliamentary election will follow in about two months, setting the stage for Islamists to renew their struggle with more liberal-minded opponents.

On the political front, tensions remain high. The opposition says the constitution, crafted mostly by Mursi's Islamist allies, fails to guarantee personal freedoms and the rights of women and minorities. The government denies this.

    ECONOMIC WORRIES

Once a darling of emerging market investors, Egypt's economy has taken a hammering since Mubarak's fall.

The budget deficit surged to a crippling 11 percent of gross domestic product in the financial year that ended in June 2012 and is forecast to exceed 10 percent this year.

In a further worrying sign, Egypt has made it illegal for travelers to carry more than $10,000 in cash in or out of the country amid growing fears the government may not be able to get its fragile finances under control.

Reflecting investor concerns, Standard and Poor's cut Egypt's long-term credit rating this week and said another cut was possible if political turbulence worsened.

Adding fuel to people's worries, the central bank also said it was taking steps to safeguard bank deposits, in a statement which emerged after some Egyptians said they had taken out cash out of concern their accounts would be frozen by authorities.

Without broad support, Mursi will find it hard to implement reforms needed to secure a $4.8 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund.

Shortly before the referendum, Mursi enraged many by introducing hikes on the sales tax on goods and services that ranged from alcoholic beverages, cigarettes and mobile phone calls to automobile licenses and quarrying permits.

In an embarrassing policy U-turn, he withdrew them within hours under criticism from his opponents and the media.

Facing public anger, the Muslim Brotherhood's party, which propelled Mursi to office in an election earlier this year, may now also face a tougher fight in the parliamentary election.

Is The Time Right To Lease A Car? | Top Finance Blog

    Listen with webreader

I have to admit that this is a topic I wasn?t sure would ever come back almost 4 years ago. It was early in 2009 when almost every car dealership decided that leasing cars was a bad practice and ended these types of programs. At the same time though our financial world was crashing, to the extent that even banks stopped sending out credit card offers; those were good days.

It seems that car leasing is back, and if a strong way. Not only are the payments for cars pretty low, but many dealers are offering the same money down, an extended payment arrangement, and saying that your credit is good no matter what state it?s in.

Why is this happening? Here are some reasons:

    1. The economy is improving. No matter what naysayers believe unemployment is dropping, the economy has been growing for years, albeit slowly, and almost every other industry is recovering in some way.

    2. The fallout of car dealerships that folded and styles of cars that went away is long past. While I?m upset that I?ll never be able to purchase a Grand Prix again (although car styles sometimes come back), those models that are around are pretty good, remaining car dealerships are strong, and competition is a good thing once again.

    3. Inventory; there?s too much of it. Whenever there?s too much inventory great deals are offered, and none get as good as the automobile industry.

    4. Everyone is being pragmatic in realizing that the last 3 years have been an aberration on many people?s credit reports, and some dealers are able to overlook bad credit that?s occurred during that period.

If it?s a great deal for individuals what about businesses? Companies that need large numbers of cars, such as car rental companies and governmental agencies around the country, are also finding that they?re getting great deals on car leasing opportunities. Fantastic maintenance packages as fleet management services are being offered from some of the larger car manufacturers who are trying to bring some of their former customers, who have had to rely on older cars for awhile, back into the fold.

Not all deals are the same, however. A leasing deal for a Hyundai will probably offer most consumers a better deal that one for a Lexus, and smaller cars will be a better deal overall that large cars. Whatever your needs are, the time seems to be right to look at leasing once again, no matter if you?re an individual or company.

(AP) ? Thousands of Christians from the world over packed Manger Square in Bethlehem Monday to celebrate the birth of Jesus in the ancient West Bank town where he was born.

For their Palestinian hosts, this holiday season was an especially joyous one, with the hardships of the Israeli occupation that so often clouded previous Christmas Eve celebrations eased by the United Nations' recent recognition of an independent state of Palestine.

Festivities led up to the Midnight Mass at St. Catherine's Church, next to the fourth-century Church of the Nativity, built over the grotto where tradition says Jesus was born.

"From this holy place, I invite politicians and men of good will to work with determination for peace and reconciliation that encompasses Palestine and Israel in the midst of all the suffering in the Middle East," said the top Roman Catholic cleric in the Holy Land, Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal in his annual address. "Please continue to fight for a just cause to achieve peace and security for the people of the Holy Land."

In his pre-Christmas homily, Twal said the road to actual freedom was still long, but this year's festivities were doubly joyful, celebrating "the birth of Christ our Lord and the birth of the state of Palestine."

"The path (to statehood) remains long, and will require a united effort," added Twal, a Palestinian citizen of Jordan, at the patriarchate's headquarters in Jerusalem's Old City.

Then he set off in a procession for the West Bank city of Bethlehem, Jesus' traditional birthplace. There, he was reminded that life on the ground for Palestinians has not changed since the U.N. recognized their state last month in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and east Jerusalem and the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

Twal had to enter the biblical town through a massive metal gate in the barrier of towering concrete slabs Israel built between Jerusalem and Bethlehem during a wave of Palestinian suicide bombings in the last decade. The Israeli military, which controls the crossing, said it significantly eased restrictions for the Christmas season.

Israel, backed by the United States, opposed the statehood bid, saying it was a Palestinian ploy to bypass negotiations. Talks stalled four years ago.

Hundreds of people greeted Twal in Manger Square, outside the Church of Nativity. The mood was festive under sunny skies, with children dressed in holiday finery or in Santa costumes, and marching bands playing in the streets.

After nightfall, a packed Manger Square, resplendent with strings of lights, decorations and a 17-meter (55-foot) Christmas tree, took on a festival atmosphere, as pilgrims mixed with locals.

A choral group from the Baptist Church in Jerusalem performed carols on one side of the square, handing out sheets of lyrics and encouraging others to sing along with songs such as "We Wish You A Merry Christmas."

Vendors sold balloons, cotton candy and corn on the cob, bands played Christmas songs and tourists packed cafes that are quiet most of the rest of the year. Pilgrims from around the world wandered the streets, singing Christmas carols and visiting churches.

Devout Christians said it was a moving experience to be so close to the origins of their faith.

"It's a special feeling to be here, it's an encounter with my soul and God," said Joanne Kurczewska, a professor at Warsaw University in Poland, who was visiting Bethlehem for a second time at Christmas.

Pastor Al Mucciarone, 61, from Short Hills, New Jersey, agreed.

"We come here to celebrate Jesus. This is a very important town. Great things come from small events. The son of God was born in this small village. We hope all will follow Jesus," he said.

Audra Kasparian, 45, from Salt Lake City, Utah, called her visit to Bethlehem "a life event to cherish forever. It is one of those events that is great to be a part of."

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas also visited Bethlehem and said "peace will prevail from the birthplace of Jesus, and we wish everyone peace and happiness," according to the official Palestinian Wafa news agency.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a special Christmas greeting too, wishing Christians "a year of security, prosperity and peace."

Christmas is the high point of the year in Bethlehem, which, like the rest of the West Bank, is struggling to recover from the economic hard times that followed the violent Palestinian uprising against Israel that broke out in late 2000.

Tourists and pilgrims who were scared away by the fighting have been returning in larger numbers. Last year's Christmas Eve celebration produced the highest turnout in more than a decade, with some 100,000 visitors, including foreign workers and Arab Christians from Israel.

The Israeli Tourism Ministry predicted a 25 percent drop from that level this year, following last month's clash between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza, which put a chill on tourist arrivals. Foreign tourists heading to Bethlehem must pass through Israel or the Israel-controlled border crossing into the West Bank from Jordan.

Outside the town's quaint Manger Square, Bethlehem is a drab, sprawling town with a dwindling Christian base - a far cry from the pastoral village of biblical times.

About 22,000 Palestinians live in Bethlehem, according to the town council, but combined with several surrounding communities has a population of some 50,000 people.

Overall, there are only about 50,000 Christians in the West Bank, less than 3 percent of the population, the result of a lower birthrate and increased emigration. Bethlehem's Christians make up only a third of its residents, down from 75 percent a few decades ago.

Elias Joha, a 44-year-old Christian who runs a souvenir store, said even with the U.N. recognition, this year's celebrations were sad for him. He said most of his family has left, and that if he had the opportunity, he would do the same.

"These celebrations are not even for Christians because there are no Christians. It is going from bad to worse from all sides ... we are not enjoying Christmas as before."

Located on the southeastern outskirts of Jerusalem, Bethlehem has the highest unemployment in the West Bank, but the tourist boom of Christmas offered a brief reprieve. Officials say all 34 hotels in the town are fully booked for the Christmas season, including 13 new ones built this year.

Israel turned Bethlehem over to Palestinian civil control a few days before Christmas in 1995, and since then, residents have been celebrating the holiday regardless of their religion. Many Muslims took part in celebration Monday as well.

Christians across the region marked the holiday.

In Iraq, Christians gathered for services with tight security, including at Baghdad's Our Lady of Salvation church, the scene of a brutal October 2010 attack that killed more than 50 worshippers and wounded scores more.

Earlier this month, Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, who is responsible for the Vatican's outreach to the Middle East's Catholic communities, traveled to Iraq and presided over a Mass to rededicate the church following renovations. In his homily, he remembered those who were killed and expressed hope that "the tears shed in this sacred place become the good seed of communion and witness and bear much fruit," according to an account by Vatican Radio.

The exact number of Christians remaining in Iraq is not known, but it has fallen sharply from as many as 1.4 million before the U.S.-led invasion nearly a decade ago to about 400,000 to 600,000, according community leaders cited by the U.S. State Department.

In the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI lit a Christmas peace candle set on the windowsill of his private studio.

Pilgrims, tourists and Romans gathered below in St. Peter's Square for the inauguration Monday evening of a Nativity scene and cheered when the flame was lit.

Later, the pope led Christmas Eve Mass in St. Peter's Basilica, prayed that Israelis and Palestinians live in peace and freedom, and asked the faithful to pray for strife-torn Syria as well as Lebanon and Iraq.

The ceremony began at 10 p.m. local time Monday with the blare of trumpets, meant to symbolize Christian joy over the news of Christ's birth in Bethlehem. The basilica's main bell tolled outside, and the sweet voices of the Vatican's boys' choir wafted across the packed venue.

Christmas Eve Mass at the Vatican traditionally began at midnight, but the start time was moved up years ago so as to give the 85-year-old pontiff more time to rest before his Christmas Day speech. That address is to be delivered at midday Tuesday from the basilica's central balcony.
