American University?s School of Education, Teaching and Health, in the College of Arts and Sciences, is seeking a candidate to join a dedicated and accomplished community of faculty, students and staff as a faculty member in Special Education: Learning Disabilities. This is a full-time tenure track appointment at an open rank (Assistant, Associate or Full Professor) to begin in the fall of 2013. Depending on qualifications, the appointee to this position may be recommended for tenure at the time of hiring.

The School of Education, Teaching and Health (SETH) is NCATE-accredited and offers comprehensive and innovative programs across curriculum and instruction (elementary and early childhood education, urban education, international education), health management, and learning disabilities, leading to undergraduate and Masters? degrees.? We share a fundamental commitment to social justice through academic excellence, equity, diversity, and community.

The candidate will possess strong research skills and a research agenda that has led to grant funded research. This faculty member is expected to build synergies within SETH and across campus; in particular, with the Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience program in our Department of Psychology and/or with Disability Studies in the School of International Service. The successful applicant will also participate in already established, funded programs of collaborative research within SETH, at the University, and at The Lab School of Washington. In addition we are seeking candidates with excellent teaching skills to contribute broadly to our Master?s program in Special Education. The successful applicant will help to expand SETH?s capacity for greater service to students with diverse learning needs and their families in the metropolitan Washington, DC area.

Responsibilities: The new faculty member will engage in ongoing research and seek external funding, teach courses in his/her area of expertise, and provide service to improve the delivery of special education services to children with disabilities and their families that will have far-reaching effects internationally, nationally, and in the Washington, DC area. In addition, the successful applicant will advise and direct special education Master?s Degree students.

Qualifications: Doctorate in Special Education or a closely related area; demonstrated ability to obtain and conduct externally funded scholarship, research and publication in the area of special education with particular focus on learning disabilities. This research would complement the ongoing research of the Special Education and other SETH and university faculty. The candidate will also demonstrate evidence of high quality research in special education, and a record of an outstanding teacher at the university level.
