Ryan: Explaining tax plan math too time-consuming

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Paul Ryan says it would take too long to explain the numbers behind the tax plan that he and Mitt Romney are proposing.

The Republican vice presidential nominee says he and Romney want a 20 percent cut in all income tax rates. He says they would pay for those cuts by closing loopholes and deductions.

President Barack Obama and Democrats have hammered Romney and Ryan for refusing to say until after the election which tax loopholes they would close.

Ryan told "Fox News Sunday" that "it would take me too long to go through all the math."

Ryan said he and Romney would start by closing loopholes for higher-income Americans.

Miami-based Venezuelans to vote in New Orleans

(AP) ? By bus and car, commercial flight and charter, U.S.-based Venezuelans are traveling en masse to New Orleans in the coming days, spending hundreds of dollars and in some cases more than a day of their time to cast a vote in their country's presidential election.

The government of President Hugo Chavez earlier this year closed the country's consulate in Miami, where most Venezuelans living in the U.S. have cast ballots in the past. It later said voters would have to travel to New Orleans if they want to participate on Oct. 7.

It's a hardship in terms of time and money for many potential voters. But some, especially those who want to stop Chavez from being re-elected after 13 years in power, are determined to make the trip anyway.

Carolina Guevara, a 21-year-old college student, plans to take the 15-hour bus ride from Miami to New Orleans, an 870-mile (1,400-kilometer) trek.

"We want to demonstrate to the government that even if they put obstacles in our path, we will practice our right to vote," said Guevara, who hopes to return to Venezuela after completing her political science studies at Miami Dade College.

The Venezuelan government closed its Miami mission after the State Department expelled consul Livia Acosta amid an investigation into recordings that seemed to implicate her in an Iranian plot for a cyber-attack against the U.S.

The closure affected nearly 20,000 Venezuelan voters living in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina who had registered to vote at the Miami consulate. Most Venezuelan voters in the United States live in the Miami area and the vast majority of those are critical of the Chavez government.

After the Miami mission closed, Venezuelan election officials said that voters registered there would have to cast ballots in New Orleans, where the next-nearest consulate is located. Venezuelan opposition leaders accused the government of trying to disenfranchise voters, a charge officials denied.

"They tried to do everything possible to prevent us from voting," said Gisela Parra, a former judge who left Venezuela in 2005 after being accused of conspiring against Chavez. "The pressure was such that they had to open a voting center far away, in New Orleans. It's like punishing us."

Parra, who plans to volunteer at the New Orleans voting center, said Venezuelan electoral officials "had the obligation" to make another Miami location available.

But Tibisay Lucena, president of Venezuela's Elections Council, countered that voters registered in Miami "were relocated using the same criteria used inside the country, telling them to go to the nearest polling station."

About 15,800 Venezuelans in the U.S. voted in their country's Dec. 2006 presidential election, three-quarters of them in Miami.

Of the 10,800 Venezuelans voting in Florida, 98 percent cast ballots for the opposition candidate and 2 percent for Chavez. Thirty-four percent of registered voters did not participate, according to figures from Venezuela's Elections Council.

Most Venezuelans in the U.S. are professionals or businesspeople who left their country after Chavez became president in 1999. The number of Venezuelans in the U.S. burgeoned from 91,500 in 2000 to 215,000 in 2010, according to the 2010 Census, with 57 percent of them living in Florida.

Numerous groups surfaced to assist U.S.-based Venezuelan voters, with information distributed on the Internet and social media, as well as at coffee shops and bookstores frequented by Venezuelans.

The groups include Voto Joven and Voto Donde Sea, comprised mostly of young people, and the Mesa de la Unidad Democratica, or Democratic Unity Table, a coalition of political parties backing opposition presidential candidate Henrique Capriles.

Beatriz Olavarria, who leads a commission created by the opposition alliance to distribute voter information and mobilize observers, said she hopes at least half of the voters registered in Miami will cast ballots in New Orleans. "Something tells me that many people will get on board at the last minute," she said.

Olavarria, who has volunteered in Miami during past Venezuelan elections, created the website www.Miami7octubre.com, to provide information about the New Orleans vote.

The group's major push now is figuring out how to get registered voters to the Louisiana city, where balloting will be held in a convention center. Opposition members complain that voting will not occur inside the mission itself, but Lucena, the electoral council president, said "the rules state that the polling center must be as near as possible to a consulate."

In most cases, traveling from here to New Orleans to vote would require at least one night away from home.

With travel costs a major obstacle for many potential voters, financial adviser Andres Casanova and his childhood friend Andres Morrison are collecting donations to pay for charter planes to ferry Venezuelans to New Orleans.

So far, they have received almost $355,700 in donations, enough to pay for trips for 1,100 voters. But far more people ? as many as 3,000 ? have registered on the organization's website, www.aerovotar.com , for seats assigned on a first-come, first- served basis.

Voto Donde Sea, meanwhile, is collecting donations to subsidize bus fares for voters, said group leader Vanessa Duran.

Milagros and Fernando Nunez Noda are renting a car with another couple to make the trip from Miami.

"We're going no matter what," said Nunez Noda, a journalist and businessman.

"It's like they threw down a challenge," he said of the government's decision to move the balloting to New Orleans. "We will prove our strength."

USU soccer: Aggies open WAC play with a scoreless draw against New Mexico State Friday

Utah State soccer opened its final season in the Western Athletic Conference with a 0-0 overtime tie against New Mexico State Friday afternoon in Las Cruces.

This was the Aggies' first-ever tie in a WAC opener, as they are now 5-2-1 to start league play in eight seasons in the WAC. Utah State also tied the school record for overtime matches in a season with seven draws in 12 matches so far this season. The 2006 Aggies also had seven matches that saw extra time. The navy Aggies are now 5-2-5 this season, going 0-4-1 in their last five matches. The crimson Aggies are 1-7-3, going 0-5-2 in their last seven matches. Both Aggie teams are 0-0-1 in league play.

Utah State is now 3-0-1 all-time against New Mexico State, and the USU defense maintained its all-time shutout over NMSU, as the northern Aggies have out-scored their maroon counterparts, 8-0, in the four total meetings.

"It was a back-and-forth match; it was what conference matches will be," USU head coach Heather Cairns said. "Everybody is fighting for valuable points; everybody is hungry and everybody wants to put points on the board. Today was just a match-up of two teams that really left everything out there."

The Aggies wasted no time getting off a shot when sophomore midfielder Lexie Morgan fired off a shot that was saved by New Mexico State goalkeeper Mikaela Bitner in the sixth minute. Junior midfielder Jennifer Flynn added a shot that went high in the 21st minute.

In the first half, the visiting Aggies had four shots, three of them being on goal, while earning a pair of cornerkicks. The home Aggies had two shots, one on goal and one cornerkick in the first stanza of play, leaving the match scoreless at intermission.

To start the second half, USU had two shots on goal in the first 12 minutes of the second period. Sophomore forward Jade Tarver and junior defender Jessica Hoskin had shots saved by Bitner.

In a physical match that saw four yellow cards and two red cards, New Mexico State had the slight edge in fouls, 8-7.

Junior midfielder Kendra Pemberton had a couple shots late in that match that Bitner was able to reign in.

Senior goalkeeper Ashlyn Mulford recorded five saves but missed the final 43 seconds of the match after getting a red card after a defensive play on NMSU after the home team counter-attacked after a USU cornerkick. Freshman Jeannie Woller came in for the final 43 seconds, earning one save. Mulford did earn her fourth shutout of the season.

Flynn finished the match with four shots, three of them on goal, while Morgan, Pemberton and junior forward Mari Miyashiro had two shots apiece.

Utah State continues WAC play on the road against league newcomer, No. 18 Denver on Sunday, Sept. 30, at 12 p.m. The Aggies and the Pioneers are 1-1 against each other with the last meeting taking place in 1998 when Denver won, 2-1. This is the third ranked team that USU has faced this season with a loss to No. 12 BYU and a tie against No. 23 Washington.

Live Stats can be accessed through the USU website.

Desperate To Improve Sales Results? 3 Lessons Learned From Yoga

Selling Skills and Lessons from YogaI began practicing yoga 4+ years ago as a way to stay fit, flexible and healthy so that I could maintain my type A lifestyle.? At that time I was working in the chaotic world of local media sales which further accelerated my type A tendencies.

Actually, I did not find yoga.? Yoga found me. ?The studio I chose to practice at fit conveniently into my hectic schedule offering classes 5 nights a week at 8:30pm.? This gave me time to rush home from work, feed my family, get the homework underway, race to the studio, lie down on my mat and wonder if anyone remembered to feed the dogs.

Class began with the teacher reminding us that yoga is a journey and to work to the edge while honoring where our bodies were that night.? But that wasn?t for me. No, yoga was simply a means to an end.? It wasn?t about the journey it was about quick results ? I wanted maximum results in minimum time.? If the person next to me was standing on one leg while pulling the other leg backwards and up over their head then by golly my leg would be over my head too, even if it hurt to contort into such a position.?? Needless to say I was incredibly sore after my first couple of dozen classes and sustained a few sidelining injuries early.? While I put on quite a show, my goals remained elusive.

Meanwhile, my teachers told me I brought a ?new kind of something? into the yoga room.?? ?Do tell?, I said.? ?Frantic energy?, they replied.? They advised me to slow down and use that energy to strengthen my core because a strong core would be the foundation needed to allow me to achieve my goals.

That?s when it hit me: I was frantic in the yoga room and just as frantic at work (just like most of my colleagues at the media company).? We were frantic to figure out how to balance this world of new and traditional media and how to maximize sales results within it.? We tried everything. ??We wrote sales pitches and made every rep memorize them.? ?And then, when the results didn?t material fast enough, we rewrote them and memorized the new ones.? We design product bundles, certain that our clients would see their value and the sales people find them easier to sell. ?And then, when the results didn?t materialize fast enough, we redesigned them all over again. We swapped out sales managers and sale people, certain we could achieve better results by replacing them with new people who were outstanding performers in other companies.? And then, when the results didn?t materialize fast enough, we swapped them out again.? By now you probably get the picture: Just like in yoga, at the office I was working frantically but not achieving the desired results that our investors, shareholders and employees expected.

What we didn?t try was exactly what my yoga teachers had been coaching me to do in my practice; slow down and redirect the energy to strengthen the core. ???So there are three lessons I take away from my yoga journey that I share with you to make your sales journey more rewarding:

1. ?Slow down

Take the time to assess, plan, do and review. If you are not getting the desired results with your current plan then consider doing a formal Sales Effectiveness Assessment.? Take the time to look at your current recruiting and training models, sales and coaching processes and methodologies, SFA utilization, marketing support and compensation plan in light of the changing environment and determine where gaps exist.? Direct your precious resources and energy on doing those things that will have meaningful and significant business impact for you and your clients.

2. ?Concentrate on gaps in the core first

Clearly defined sales and coaching processes and methodologies are the core of high performing sales organizations.? Why?? Because it gives sales people and their managers a clear roadmap for success.? When the sales process and methodology is clearly defined you can take ordinary people, place them in the structure, teach them the process by which you know they can succeed and coach them to extraordinary performance.? When you examine any department that produces consistent results it is typically because someone has identified the logical, repeatable process by which the department can perform its function.

3. ?Listen to your coach

Sales Coaches not only need to know and demonstrate your sales process and methodology they must also master the coaching process that your organization, has clearly defined.? Effective sales coaching is the accelerator on your sales process and it has been determined that effective sales coaching can increase performance by up to 20%.

I have learned to take coaching from my yoga teachers.? I have slowed down, strengthened my core, and my foot is almost over my head.? But more importantly I am reaching my health and fitness goals.? My hope is that you can apply these same principles to your sales organization and improve its fitness.? Namaste.

When you faced a challenge in your selling career what are some of the things you did to break through it?

This Kalil Life: Guilt + Motherhood = CRAP

ShelbyandCooperSept2012

If you read my blog enough, then you know I have two kids and I work full time. It might even assert I work more than full time, since a lot of my work takes me away from home as I travel to clients and support them throughout various stages of their projects. That means there are many school nights I?m not home and occasionally, I?m away on weekends as well. What you may not know is I have huge amounts of guilt. I feel guilt every single time I leave for another trip. I feel guilt when I drop Cooper off at preschool when I?m home, but have a ton of work to do and can?t manage him and my workload. I feel guilt when I miss a field trip at Shelby?s school. I feel guilty all the time and it?s the most miserable feeling.

But here?s the thing: my kids are very happy, healthy and well taken care of. They are surrounded by love and support every moment of their lives. They have two parents who love them and are very active in their lives. Even when I?m not home, I?m emailing teachers; calling to make arrangements for activities; or helping with homework (God Bless FaceTime and Skype). They have grandparents who pitch in on a regular basis. My in-laws regularly invite them over, so much so they have their own beds and a full set of supplies at their home. They have Aunties and Uncles they are close to and adore them. They have wonderful teachers, friends and a school where they thrive. Most of my guilt comes from other people who repeatedly question me about my work and my travel. There are lots of people, mostly other moms, who feel the need to judge and question me, my choices and my family?s dynamics.

As I type this I?m in Denmark. I was recently having dinner at the home of one of my colleagues. He and his friends host a regular supper club with three families in the neighborhood. As I sat with this slice of Danish society they asked me about my life and family. Never once did they posed the question ?Are you sad to be away from your kids?? or ?How do you do it?? or ?Is it hard to be a mom and travel the way you do?? or ?I?m sure your kids miss you, right?? ? the kind of questions Americans ask me all the time. The room included a mother of two who is also a college professor and married to a doctor, as well a social worker with three kids who is married to an IT project manager. There is such a different perspective here in Europe. Nearly everyone woman I?ve ever met works and has children; and somehow the kids here are scared for life. In fact, European children seem stronger, more independent and better prepared to tackle life. I see kids all the time hopping on the bus and easily navigating the city without the help of an adult. This is a tribute to the wonderful parenting I see from my colleagues and other Europeans. They love and care for their children, but they also give them space to grow and experience life.

My dear friend Liz recently blogged about her choice to send her daughter to daycare a few days a week and it made me think about my own choices on how I raise my children. The key point she made was this: she knows she?s making the right choice for her family and that?s all that should matter. I agree. The rest of the world has no idea what?s best for me or what?s best for my family. I know. And when I hold onto this truth and push out the voices that tell me otherwise, the guilt starts to subside.

It?s time for me to let go of my guilt, let it float away. And I?m going to make an effort to be less judgmental of other mothers because the truth is this: I have no idea. I don?t know their story. I don?t know their struggles. I don?t know what?s best for them. Instead, I?ll give them a smile and small prayer that they have peace in their lives and sunshine in their hearts. Maybe you could do the same for me?

Predatory bacterial crowdsourcing: Scientists ID simple formula that allows bacteria to engulf food in waves

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Move forward. High-five your neighbor. Turn around. Repeat.

That's the winning formula of one of the world's smallest predators, the soil bacteria Myxococcus xanthus, and a new study by scientists at Rice University and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School shows how M. xanthus uses the formula to spread, engulf and devour other bacteria.

The study, featured on the cover of this month's online issue of the journal PLOS Computational Biology, shows how the simple motions of individual bacteria are amplified within colonies of M. xanthus to form millions-strong waves moving outward in unison. The findings answer longstanding questions about how the waves form and the competitive edge they provide M. xanthus.

"When the cells at the edge of the colony are moving outward, they are unlikely to encounter another M. xanthus cell, so they keep moving forward," said lead author Oleg Igoshin, assistant professor of bioengineering at Rice. "When they are traveling the other way, back toward the rest of the colony, they are likely to encounter other cells of their kind, and when they pass beside one of these and touch, they get the signal to turn around."

Igoshin said the net effect is that the cells "spend more time moving outward than inward, and as a result, they spread faster."

M. xanthus is an oft-studied model organism in biology but, Igoshin said, it is one of the few well-studied organisms that lends itself to the study of systems biology, a rapidly growing field of life sciences that aims to model and discover emergent phenomena -- like the rippling waves of M. xanthus colonies -- that have a basis in genetics but only become apparent when cells cooperate.

"Most of the model bacteria that biologists selected for study in the lab were chosen because they were very good at growing on their own in a test tube and not sticking to the wall or to one another," Igoshin said. "When we were choosing model organisms, we lost a lot of the social properties that systems biologists like to study. M. xanthus is different in that people chose to study it because it grew into cool patterns and structures arising from cooperative behavior."

As a computational biologist, Igoshin specializes in creating mathematical models that accurately describe the behavior of living systems. Such models are useful for understanding the cellular and even genetic basis of emergent phenomena.

In the case of M. xanthus waves, Igoshin and Rice graduate student Haiyang Zhang and postdoctoral fellow Peng Shi created an agent-based model, a computer program that simulated the actions and interactions of individual cells to examine how they collectively produced M. xanthus waves.

The model showed that just three ingredients were needed to generate the rippling behavior:

  • When two cells moving toward one another have side-to-side contact, they exchange a signal that causes one of them to reverse.
  • A time interval after each reversal during which cells cannot reverse again.
  • Physical interactions that cause the cells to align.

To verify the model's accuracy, Igoshin's team partnered with UTHealth's Heidi Kaplan, associate professor of microbiology and molecular genetics. Kaplan and graduate students Zalman Vaksman and Douglas Litwin, both of the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston, used time-lapse images from microscopes to examine the behavior of M. xanthus waves. The experiments confirmed the relationships between wavelength, reversal time and cell velocity that had been predicted by the model.

"We also found an interesting flip side for the behavior, which was counterintuitive and unexpected," Kaplan said. "The same behavior that causes the waves to spread quickly and to cover newly found prey also allows M. xanthus cells to stay on a patch of food and not drift away until the food is devoured."

The exact biochemical signals that the cells use to sense their prey and signal one another to reverse are still a mystery, but the new study helps to narrow the field. For example, many signals between bacteria do not require physical contact, but the study found that the reversing behavior requires contact between cells.

"If the mechanism for this behavior can be found, it could prove useful for synthetic biologists who are interested in programming touch-induced functions into synthetic organisms," Igoshin said.

The research was supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The computer modeling was performed on three NSF-funded Rice supercomputers -- STIC, SUG@R and DAVinCI -- that are jointly managed and operated by Rice's Ken Kennedy Institute for Information Technology and Rice's Department of Information Technology.

Satellite launch stirs passions before Venezuela vote

CARACAS (Reuters) - President Hugo Chavez said the launch on Friday of Venezuela's second satellite showed the achievements of his self-styled revolution just days before he seeks re-election, but his rival said it symbolized his neglect of problems closer to home.

"We're seeing history ... . Venezuela has been with China at the forefront of history," Chavez said after standing to applaud during a video link-up between the presidential palace, a launch center in China's Gobi Desert and a Caracas street party.

As campaigning in the close election race approaches its final week in South America's biggest oil exporter, both political camps are planning their last huge rallies while making last-minute efforts to win over undecided voters.

Opposition candidate Henrique Capriles has mocked Chavez, who he says is focused on spreading his socialist project around the world but has done little to address the daily problems of voters such as crime, power cuts and inflation.

A dozen Venezuelan officials were at China's Jiuquan launch center, near the Mongolian border, to watch the rocket carrying the "Miranda" satellite blast off into a clear blue sky.

Venezuelan state TV had broadcast hours of build-up alongside the headline "Space Revolution ... a Sovereign View."

For Capriles, it was a prime example of what he calls grandiose plans that prove Chavez is out of touch with voters.

"How many Venezuelans sleep in a refuge tonight? How many towns without an ambulance? Another satellite for the candidate of continuity. On October 7 this will change," he said on Twitter.

In 2008 China launched Venezuela's first satellite - the Venesat-1, or "Simon Bolivar" - to carry communications gear.

The second spacecraft will take photographs that Chavez's government says will help it protect the environment, improve urban planning and crack down on illegal mining and drug cultivation.

Both satellites were named after 19th-century South American independence heroes.

The launch was beamed to big screens at a street party in Caracas's museum district, where Chavez was mobbed by supporters when he arrived earlier in the evening to make a short speech.

In the run-up to previous elections, the president has often unveiled many projects in an effort to impress voters. This time, his campaigning has been much less intense, partly because he has suffered two bouts of cancer since June 2011.

"YOUR FUTURE"

Chavez, 58, says his "bourgeois" foe will scrap his social welfare programs, such as subsidized food stores and programs that make cash payments to poor families with children.

"It's your future, young people, not mine. I've lived," he told thousands of red-clad supporters at a rally on Friday.

"Some people might be unhappy because of failures by our government. 'They didn't fix the road. The power went off. The water went off. I couldn't find a job.'

"Well, that may be true in some cases and I take the responsibility ... . One of my pledges is for greater efficiency in the management of the government."

Capriles wants to tap into that frustration over day-to-day issues. He says Chavez's government should have done much more, given the record oil revenue it has been spending.

"Don't you think 14 years is enough? Don't you think the time has come to move forward?" he asked at a rally on Friday. "The skinny one is here to make you a commitment and keep to it," he shouted, using the nickname given to him by some supporters.

Most of the best-known polls show Chavez ahead, but Capriles' numbers have been inching up and he has a small lead in two surveys. Polls are notoriously controversial in Venezuela and public opinion shifts quickly.

Investors expect Capriles to end a five-year nationalization drive if he wins, and reduce state intervention in the economy.

Chavez has vowed to strengthen his oil-financed socialism if he gets six more years in office. That will likely mean new confrontations with the private sector, and more support for the president's leftist allies in the region.

Venezuela's widely traded debt has risen as Capriles' poll numbers inched up. The price of its popular Global 2027 bond has climbed by more than 3.5 percent in the past week alone.

Wall Street would like a more business-friendly leader in Venezuela, although Chavez's government has never given any sign of defaulting on the country's debts.

Communication Items You'll Want Before TSHTF ? Part 1

Having good radio equipment is important for many reasons. What will you do when there is no Internet? What will you do when there is no cellphone service? How will you know what?s going on in other parts of the country, let alone the world? Radio signals don?t need an intermediary, they just bounce all over the earth and are received by radios.

?

?

It?s not even necessary that you transmit (speak) on the radio, but the information you can garner from just listening to others from far away is worth the time it takes to understand how to use a radio.

There are many ways to go in purchasing a communications radio, depending on your budget. You can buy yourself a brand new, state-of-the-art Kenwood or I-com for example, both of which are great radios. But the expense can be quite high, typically in the many hundreds of dollars.

A less expensive but just as viable way to go is a ?free band radio?. This is a 10 meter ham radio that has had additional freeband frequencies installed. This will expand coverage to include the 12, 11 (the CB frequency band) and sometimes 9 meter bands. In a converted CB radio, this is called a radio with extra channels.

A 10 meter radio is very common and inexpensive, as well as their low-rent cousins, CB radios. Many can be found on ebay for under $200 and may already have the additional frequencies installed. Also any good SSB (single side band) CB radio can have what they call ?Extra Channels Added? by any good tech. (Lots of mods here?http://www.dxzone.com/tag-cb-mods/.) CB shops at truck stops often times have used free band radios for sale at good prices, but check Ebay for prices on used radios before going.

Any frequency on the radio can be used in various modes, the most common being AM, Single Side Band (SSB), Upper Side Band (USB) and CW. CW means constant wave mode, which is the mode used for Morse Code and RTTY. It is possible to send several and receive multiple pages of text files via RTTY. The software needed can be found here (http://gmfsk.sourceforge.net/?). Radios with a CW mode like the RCI 2950 (et al) and the Uniden HR2510 have the CW mode installed. There are other models that also have CW mode, however no CB radios have CW mode. You can send pictures and text files to others, similar to a fax. This will be an excellent way for the people to maintain contact with others during times of crisis or total collapse.

The legal frequency range of a Citizens Band radio is 26905 megahertz through 27405 megahertz (mostly in 10 kilocycle steps per channel), covering the 40 channels of CB radio. Freebanding is when an unlicensed radio operator uses the non-allocated frequencies in the 11 meter band (CB radio and beyond). When society has collapsed, who care who has a license?

Most freebanders use the Single Side Band (SSB) mode of these channels as opposed to the AM mode. The chatter you may have heard on channel 19 (the truckers channel) is in the AM mode. AM mode of operation is limited in range, however using the SSB mode affords greater range and more output power. A legal CB radio has 4 watts output on the AM band and 12 watts on the SSB band.

This means that when conditions are right (sunspots, etc.) SSB signals can travel greater distances than those in the AM mode. One early morning, while driving west on I-90 in Idaho, I made a contact with Tokyo, Japan using SSB and a HR 2510 Uniden radio. That was a contact of over 7000 miles with less than 20 watts of power.

Once the world goes in to collapse there will still be thousands of people using the freebands. This can be used to create a radio round-robin or?relay?to share information and help others.

The international call frequencies are:

27555 USB The US and the world except for Europe

26285 USB Europe

First a little bit about how to use a call frequency. A call frequency is a frequency on which we make contact with someone who would like to have a conversation with us. The parties then go to another frequency of their choice to continue the conversation. It is unlike the chatter you may have heard on the AM side ? CB Channel 19 and all that noise. The conversation is called a QSO.

First we must wait for a moment of silence to break in and make our call. The protocol for asking for a QSO is like this:

?C-Q, C-Q, NEW MEXICO CALLING AND LISTING ON 27560? is a typical call or CQ (?seek-you?). This tells listeners on the call frequency where to find you to have a conversation. Then we move our frequency dial to that frequency. Once there we make another call like this:

?CQ CQ New Mexico calling for any and all stations.? Or if your are looking to make a contact in a specific place:

?CQ CQ New Mexico Calling for all stations in _____? (the place of your choosing) ?and standing by for contact.?

Antennas

There are many different kinds of viable antennas to use with your radio, some very cheap some very expensive.

Some of you may choose to make a wire antenna. One of the simplest wire antennas is the ?Inverted V? ? very good for long distance communications (what the radio community calls ?skip?). The inverted V can be made for the cost of some wire and a pole.

Others may prefer to purchase something ready made, in a box. For those of you who do, we can strongly suggest the ?V Quad?. This is a directional aluminum antenna that sends a strong signal in only one direction. Like the directional TV antennas of past times, this antenna needs a rotor (this is a motor to turn the antenna from the radio shack or you can use the ?armstrong? method). It is the best non-homebrew antenna that I have ever used.?http://www.livecbradio.com/11-meter-loop-antenna.htm

Either way, when the conditions are right you?ll be talking to the world.

When radio operators say, ?conditions are right? they mean that the skip conditions are good, allowing the radio signals to be received over longer distances than normal. Skip is when the signal travels along a mostly horizontal plane before it eventually hits the ionosphere. Like a flat rock across a lake, the signal will skip along rather than pierce the ionosphere and go out into space. This skip can cause your signal to be received with nearly as much strength as it had when it left your antenna. The contact I had with Tokyo gave me an S10 signal strength, and that is as high as it gets. Sunspots are generally the cause for good skip conditions.

Confessions of an English Tutor: The Two Writing Errors ...

Note from Nick: Today?s post is a whopper ? It?s a guest post from Jessica Ruane, and it?s a really helpful post if you?re interested in grammar, sentence structure, and the nuts and bolts of writing (and you should be!). Let us know in the comments what you think of this, and if we should continue posting some more content like this!

Confessions of an English Tutor: The Two Writing Errors EVERYBODY MakesI was an English tutor at a community college for many years. The school I worked at was the most culturally diverse campus in southern California, and I can honestly say that I?ve seen it all when it comes to good and bad writing. I?ve read plagiarized papers, helped English learners from other countries who were still learning the Roman alphabet, and worked with hundreds of students who freely admitted to me how much they ?hate writing?. No matter how different the needs of each and every student was, I started each session by saying, ?Writing is an absolute beast, but once you understand what you?re dealing with, it?s easy to tame.?

I?ve read A LOT of people?s writing at every level, from basic ESOL to honors British lit. One day, I realized that I was repeating the exact same instructions over and over because EVERYONE MAKES THE SAME MISTAKES. Whether a student was a Somalian refugee or a 45 year old native English speaker, I kept seeing the same two grammar mistakes over and over. Everywhere I looked there were run-ons and fragments.

I also read a lot of published work. Writers should read when they aren?t writing. To my horror, I realized that my students weren?t the only ones who struggled with the art of a sentence. I found fragments in newspapers and run-ons in my favorite books. So, I decided to do something about it beyond organizing workshops and study groups at my school. I needed to reach a larger audience if I was going to win this war I?m waging against run-ons and fragments. I?m starting my battle with this blog entry. So, without further adieu, here is how to avoid these two super common writing blunders straight from the horse?s (I mean tutor?s) mouth.

Super Common Writing Error #1: The Run-on Sentence

By far, the hands down most frequent grammatical error writers make is the run-on sentence. When we communicate verbally, intuition guides when we pause. This is an efficient strategy for talking, but writers can?t afford to just go with their gut.

When you are writing, if you have two independent clauses that are improperly joined, this is a run-on sentence. Believe it or not, you actually did learn this is elementary school, you just don?t remember. But don?t worry, I?m here to remind you.

What is an independent clause?

An independent clause (IC) is simply a complete sentence. A complete sentence contains: 1) a subject, 2) a verb, and 3) is a complete idea. A common misconception that writers have about run-on sentences is that they are always long. This is not necessarily true. For example: John eats, Joe sleeps. Even though this sentence is only 4 words long, it is still a run-on because it is two independent clauses improperly joined by a comma.

Types of run-ons

There are two kinds of run-on sentences. They are both equally bad.

  1. Fused Sentence: Two independent clauses slammed together with no punctuation. How rude! Our equation for a fused sentence will be: ICIC.
  2. Comma Splice: Two independent clauses improperly joined by a comma. Nice effort, but a comma is not strong enough punctuation to separate these feisty independent clauses. Our equation for a comma splice will be: IC,IC.

Basically the moral of the story here is that independent clauses are like betta fish. If they are too close to one another, they kill each other, and everyone is sad. Give your ICs the space they need by combining them correctly.

How to combine independent clauses

You may be thinking, ?Well why don?t you just make each IC its own separate sentence?? You could do that, but stylistically this is a poor solution. It would reduce your writing to short staccato sentences which would make you sound like a third grader. John sleeps. Joe eats. We walk. These technically are grammatical sentences, but you probably want to evolve your writing past elementary school.

  1. Separate independent clauses with a semicolon I almost hesitate to offer this up as a solution because semicolons are one of the most widely abused punctuation tools. You should only use a semi-colon if the ideas in your clauses are highly connected. You could say, ?Some people only drink beer; others will drink just about anything.? In this case, the ideas are closely related enough to justify using a semicolon. I always liked to tell students, ?Semicolons are like a strong spice. It?s fine to sprinkle a few here and there, but overdoing it will ruin the dish.?
  2. Combine ICs with a coordinating conjunctionYou can use a special type of word called coordinating conjunctions (cc) to combine two independent clauses. The English language contains 7 coordinating conjunctions: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So. A common acronym for remembering coordinating conjunctions is FANBOYS. Insert a comma and a coordinating conjunction between two independent clauses to fix a run-on sentence. For example, ?John eats, and Joe sleeps.? Hooray! We fixed our run-on! Our equation for this will be: IC,cc IC.
  3. Make one of your INDEPENDENT clauses a DEPENDENT clauseLike relationships, combining clauses works best when one is independent, and the other is dependent. This creates a nice balance, and avoids power struggles. This can be tricky so please listen closely. A dependant clause (DC) is made by adding a SUBORDINATING conjunction to the beginning of an independent clause.Unlike COORDINATING conjunctions, SUBORDINATING conjunctions are numerous and do not come in a neat little package for us like the FANBOYS acronym.Don?t worry. Stay with me. Examples are coming.

Here are some common subordinating conjunctions:

after notice how just as
although if unless
as lest until
as if in order to when
as long as rather than whenever
as much as now that where
as soon as provided (that) whether
as though since while
because so that why
before than supposing
even if that if only
even though though now that

To review, a dependent clause is just an independent clause with one of the words listed above at the beginning. For example, ?Before I lose my mind.? This is a dependent clause because the word ?before? is a subordinating conjunction and ?I lose my mind? is an independent clause. Subordinating conjunction + independent clause = dependent clause. Our equation for this will be: DC, IC. OR IC DC.

Back to our original run-on. ?John eats, Joe sleeps.? This can be fixed by changing it to, ??While John eats, Joe sleeps.? OR ?John eats while Joe sleeps.? It doesn?t matter whether the first or second clause is dependent! Just as long as there is one IC and one DC.

** Notice how if the DC comes first, you need a comma. If the IC comes first, a comma is not necessary **

So, to recap there are 4 ways to fix run-on sentences:

  1. Separate two ICs with a period (IC. IC). (I don?t recommend using this strategy very often. However, if you have a lot of long confusing sentences, it might be a good idea).
  2. Separate two ICs with a semicolon (IC; IC). ?(Remember to use them sparingly!)
  3. Combine two ICs with a coordinating conjunction (IC, cc IC).
  4. Make one of your independent clauses a dependent clause (DC, IC) OR (IC DC).

Let?s review that again

A run-on sentence is two independent clauses (ICs) that are improperly joined.

  • IC IC = Fused Sentence ? BAD
  • IC, IC = Comma Splice ? BAD

When independent clauses are properly used, they create grammatical sentences.

  • IC. IC = Third grade writing level, but still grammatical
  • IC; IC = Good
  • IC, cc IC = Good
  • DC, IC = Good
  • IC DC = Good

Super Common Writing Error #2: Fragments

Whew! That was a lot of information! It was necessary to get all that out of the way because you have to understand run-ons before you can tackle the next biggest writing error that English tutors see ? FRAGMENTS! I can?t tell you how common fragments are even among professional writers. (I know what intentional, poetic fragments are, but I?m not talking about the kind of fragments that authors write on purpose).

Fragments are simply incomplete sentences or ideas. Although they might not be as complex as run-ons, they are just as distracting for readers.

There are 2 types of fragments

  1. Missing either a subject OR a verb -?A complete sentence must contain two things ? a subject and a verb. This is not negotiable. Sometimes writers get drowsy and start poppin off periods all over the place. Be careful! Just like run-ons aren?t always long, fragments aren?t necessarily just sentences that are just too short.

Here are some flowery phrases that are still technically fragments:

The long and winding road ? missing a verb

The girl with gap teeth and a spray tan ? missing a verb

Might have been listening to the neighbor?s argument ? missing a subject

Will have been at the store, down the street and around the corner, for 5 hours, waiting for the pharmacist to fill the prescription ? missing a subject

These sentence fragments can all be fixed by just adding either the missing verb or subject.

  1. Dependent clausesLike needy people, dependent clauses can not stand alone on their own. You must attach an independent clause in order to complete the idea. Even though it contains a subject and a verb, the subordinating conjunction at the beginning makes the clause dependent on more information in order for it to make sense.

Some examples of dependant clauses are:

Because it was raining outside

Since I don?t have any money

After I lit the house on fire

Before it?s too late

Careful writers! Even though these clauses contain a subject and a verb, they all begin with a subordinating conjunction which means they must have an independent clause attached to them. Let?s give these poor little dependent clauses what they need and attach independent clauses.

Here are some ways we can complete those clauses:

Because it was raining outside, I stayed home.

Since I don?t have any money, I stole his wallet.

After I lit the house on fire, I felt guilty.

Before it?s too late, I need to go back to school.

Remember, it doesn?t matter whether the first or second clause is dependent! We could switch the ICs and DCs around and the sentence would still work.

I stayed home because it was raining outside.

I stole his wallet since I don?t have any money.

I felt guilty after I lit the house on fire.

I need to go back to school before it?s too late.

Isn?t that cool? English grammar can be fun if you understand it! Just remember, if your dependent clause comes first, you need a comma. If your independent clause is first, the comma is not necessary.

Writing is Harder Than Talking

People often mistakenly associate writing and speaking as similar skill sets. The reality is that this assumption cannot be further from the truth. The ability to talk and learn spoken language is something that every person on the planet is hard-wired to do. Speaking is as natural an act to us as walking; it occurs naturally, at an early stage in our lives, and develops without instruction. Unless a person was born with a physical or mental condition that prevented him or her from developing language, every human being is born with an innate ability to speak.

Written language exists on the complete other end of the spectrum. Whereas spoken language is produced spontaneously, written language requires methodical planning and time consuming execution. Spoken language utilizes paralinguistic techniques such as body language and hand gestures to communicate. In contrast, a writer cannot rely on this type of added support to convey a message to an audience. The differences between these two forms of communication are virtually endless, but we can draw a singular conclusion from them. The takeaway here is that writing is a skill that must be taught to us, and comes with a greater level of difficulty. This of course means that there are more opportunities to make mistakes when writing as opposed to speaking. Writing is a process, so don?t be too hard on yourself. Nobody gets it right the first time ? ?just ask my editor!

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The NASA rover Curiosity has beamed back pictures of bedrock that suggest a fast-moving stream, possibly waist-deep, once flowed on Mars ? a find that the mission's chief scientist called exciting.

There have been previous signs that water existed on the red planet long ago, but the images released Thursday showing pebbles rounded off, likely by water, offered the most convincing evidence so far of an ancient streambed.

There was "a vigorous flow on the surface of Mars," said chief scientist John Grotzinger of the California Institute of Technology. "We're really excited about this."

The discovery did not come as a complete surprise. NASA decided to plunk Curiosity down inside Gale Crater near the Martian equator because photos from space hinted that the spot possessed a watery past. The six-wheeled rover safely landed Aug. 5 after a nail-biting plunge through the Martian atmosphere. It's on a two-year, $2.5 billion mission to study whether the Martian environment could have been favorable for microbial life.

Present day Mars is a frozen desert with no hint of water on its radiation-scarred surface, but geological studies of rocks by previous missions suggest the planet was warmer and wetter once upon a time.

The latest evidence came from photos that Curiosity took revealing rounded pebbles and gravel ? a sign that the rocks were transported long distances by water and smoothed out.

The size of the rocks ? ranging from a sand grain to a golf ball ? indicates that they could not have been carried by wind, said mission scientist Rebecca Williams of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Ariz.

Though Curiosity did not use its high-tech instruments to drill into the rocks or analyze their chemical makeup, Grotzinger said scientists were sure that water played a role based on just studying the pictures.

It's unclear how long the water persisted on the surface, but it easily could have lasted "thousands to millions of years," said mission scientist Bill Dietrich of the University of California, Berkeley.

Curiosity chanced upon the dried-up streambed while driving to Glenelg, an intriguing spot where three types of terrain meet. Its ultimate destination is Mount Sharp, a mountain rising from the center of crater floor, but it was not expected to travel there until the end of the year.

Finding past water is a first step toward learning whether the environment could have supported microbes. Scientists generally agree that besides water and an energy source such as the sun, organic carbon is a necessary prerequisite for life.

While an ancient streambed holds promise as a potentially habitable environment, scientists don't think it's a good place to preserve the carbon building blocks of life. That's why the rover will continue its trek to the foothills of Mount Sharp where there's a better chance of finding organics.

Gay couple sues after photo used in anti-gay flier - U.S. News

Tom Privitere and Brian Edwards, a married couple living in New Jersey, said their engagement photo was altered from the original by the group, Public Advocate of the United States, which opposes gay marriage, in mailers sent during campaigning for Republican statehouse seats in Colorado.

By Miranda Leitsinger, NBC News

Tom Privitere and Brian Edwards posed for their engagement photo, holding hands and kissing, in front of the Brooklyn Bridge in 2010. The image captured one of the happiest days of their lives. But earlier this year, their special moment was soured when the photo was used in two anti-gay mailers in Colorado.

On Wednesday, the couple and their photographer filed a lawsuit Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Colorado against Public Advocate of the United States, a nonprofit that opposes same-sex marriage. They are seeking a court order saying the group violated the law, damages, costs and attorney fees for the allegedly unauthorized use of the copyrighted photo.

?We want to take back the beautiful moment in our lives that was reflected in our engagement photo before it was hijacked,? Edwards, a 32-year-old college administrator living in Montclair, N.J., told NBC News on Monday before traveling to Colorado to file the lawsuit. ?We also ? want to take a stand for others who might be similarly targeted in the future.?

The couple, who met in New York in 2000, got engaged in December 2009. The next year in May, photographer Kristina Hill snapped their engagement photos. The pair married later that year in a civil ceremony in Connecticut.

?All that we did was what any other couple would do to mark their engagement and have these photos taken for family and friends to share our joy and our excitement and help people (see) what path we were taking toward our wedding,? said Privitere, 37. ?It was a great, great day for us.?

Kristina Hill/Kristina Hill Photography

This original engagement photo of Tom Privitere and Brian Edwards was taken on May 23, 2010. The couple married in Connecticut later that year.

The couple alleged that Public Advocate seized upon that personal moment to spread what Edwards called a ?message of hate? in two mailers it sent this spring during Republican primary races for the Colorado statehouse.

One of the mailers targeted State Sen. Jean White, who supported a bill that would have granted same-sex civil unions. Across the couple?s image were the words: ?State Senator Jean White?s Idea of ?Family Values??? The other one, aimed at House candidate Jeffrey Hare, read: ?Jeffrey Hare?s Vision for Weld County?? Both candidates lost their races.

A friend alerted the couple to the mailers in late June. It?s not clear how Public Advocate got the photo, which the pair had posted to a blog about their engagement and impending nuptials. They say the group never asked the couple or Hill to use it.

When contacted by NBC News for comment on the lawsuit, Eugene Delgaudio, president of Public Advocate, said in an email that he was looking into it but did not elaborate or provide further remarks.

?The use of Tom and Brian?s likenesses, or of Kristina?s copyrighted photo, was wholly gratuitous,? said their attorney, Christine Sun, of the Southern Poverty Law Center. ?Public Advocate could have just paid for a stock photo of a gay couple kissing but instead Public Advocate decided to take this very personal photo of this happy moment and use it to attack gay people.?

? ? the doctrine of fair use is not intended to allow people to use copyrighted work just because it?s cheaper than paying for something,? she added.

The couple has experienced sleepless nights and anxiety since they learned of the mailer. They?re concerned about the impact of the mailers upon others who may have seen it, such as gay youth and families who may be struggling with accepting them.

?Colorado is a positive step in trying to right a wrong,? said Privitere, who works in entertainment ticketing. ?We?re nervous to be thrust into the public spotlight again. We?re nervous that we?re not going to represent our community the best that we can. But we?re going to do all that we can to try to fix or make this right.?
