No link between abortion, breast cancer - The Times-Herald

Published Sunday, August 19, 2012 in Opinion

The letter writer who claims that abortion leads to breast cancer is spreading false information through The Newnan Times-Herald.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one of the most respected health agencies in the world, there is no link between breast cancer and abortion, whether induced or spontaneous (a miscarriage).

According to the CDC, this issue has been extensive studied by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and its findings in the Summary Report: Early Reproductive Events and Breast Cancer Workshop conclude that there is no link between abortion and breast cancer.

See http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Risk/abortion-miscarriage for more information.

If the writer wants to help women, she missed an opportunity to educate women about the factors known to increase a woman?s chance of developing breast cancer.

According to the CDC, they are ?age (a woman?s chances of getting breast cancer increase as she gets older), a family history of breast cancer, an early age at first menstrual period, a late age at menopause, a late age at the time of birth of her first full-term baby and certain breast conditions."

Obesity is also a risk factor for breast cancer in postmenopausal women.

More information about breast cancer risk factors is found in NCI?s publication What You Need To Know About ? Breast Cancer. http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/wyntk/breast

The Newnan Times-Herald should be more careful about giving people who spread false information a bully pulpit.
